On The Fly: Top stock stories at midday

Stocks opened with moderate losses as the first day of trading for the fourth quarter got underway. Since the open, the averages have moved in a narrow trading range. Given the lower level of participation rate due to the celebration of the Rosh Hashanah holiday, the tepid action is not surprising. The market barely noticed the day's economic reports. Meanwhile, oil prices are higher by about 0.5% and gold is higher as well. ECONOMIC NEWS: In the U.S., construction spending declined 0.7% in August. The ISM manufacturing index bounced 2.1 points to 51.5 in September, above consensus of 50.2. Markit's manufacturing index fell to 51.5 for the final September print. In Europe, Markit manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index for the Eurozone rose to 52.6 in September, in line with the flash estimate. In Asia, China's official manufacturing PMI remained unchanged at 50.4 while Japan's manufacturing PMI edged up 0.1 points to 50.4 in September. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Tesla (TSLA) have gained more than 4% near noon after the company gave its quarterly update on global vehicle shipments, reporting a 70% rise in third quarter deliveries alongside a 37% growth in production, leading it to reaffirm its outlook for 50,000 deliveries in the second half of 2016... The big three U.S. automakers, Ford (F), General Motors (GM) and Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), reported sales declines during the month of September. Ford's sales dropped 8% to 204,447 vehicles, while GM and FCA US said sales were down 1% and 0.6%, respectively. Conversely, Toyota Motor (TM) and Nissan (NSANY) posted higher U.S. September sales, with the former up 1.5% to 197,260 units and the latter up 4.9% to 127,797 units. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Cabelas (CAB), which has advanced about 15% after the company agreed to be acquired by Bass Pro Shops for $65.50 per share in cash, representing an aggregate transaction value of approximately $5.5B. Additionally, Janus Capital (JNS) rose 13% after agreeing to an all-stock merger of equals with Henderson Group. Among the noteworthy losers was TASER (TASR), which dropped 14% after the New York City Police Department awarded an over $6M contract on body cameras to the company's rival Vievu, according to the New York Daily News. Also lower was Heron Therapeutics (HRTX), which slipped about 7% following the announcement that three members of its management team will be leaving the company. Additionally, Teradata (TDC) slid 6% after UBS analyst Brent Thill downgraded the stock to Sell, saying he sees downside risks to estimates as current consensus forecasts underestimate the duration and magnitude of the reset of financial expectations. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was down 73.24, or 0.4%, to 18,234.91, the Nasdaq was down 21.46, or 0.4%, to 5,290.54, and the S&P 500 was down 10.28, or 0.47%, to 2,157.99.

SolarCity deal spread offers short-term trading opportunity, says Baird
Baird analyst Ben Kallo noted the "substantial" spread between SolarCity's (SCTY) share price and Tesla's (TSLA) acquisition price and sees it as a short-term trading opportunity as he is increasingly confident that their deal will close, pinning an 80% probability on the chance that the merger occurs. Kallo keeps a Neutral rating and $25 price target on SolarCity shares.

Review process of SolarCity acquisition may be delayed, says Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Colin Rusch believes the SEC review process of Tesla's (TSLA) acquisition of SolarCity (SCTY) could be delayed due to recent activity, especially new litigation. Further, the analyst believes extension to the timeline is likely to work against the deal given the risk of ongoing "collaboration to trigger gun-jumping rules." Rusch reiterates a Perform rating on Tesla's shares.

Outlook mixed for Tesla, says Pacific Crest
After conducting checks, Pacific Crest analyst Brad Erickson says that orders for Tesla's Model X have improved, and he expects the company's Q3 deliveries to be "solid." However, he believes that the company is offering "aggressive" discounts on Model 3 vehicles, and he thinks the company "faces overall ASP and margin risk," along with a questionable long-term demand outlook. Erickson remains cautious on the stock and keeps a Sector Weight rating on the shares.

Baird estimates Tesla to report 21,000 deliveries for Q3
Baird analyst Ben Kallo said he expects Tesla (TSLA) to report its Q3 delivery figures by early next week, possibly on Monday, October 3, and he estimates the company will report 21,000 total deliveries, including 12,000 Model S deliveries and 9,000 Model X deliveries. Kallo thinks a delivery number above 20,000 vehicles will be viewed as positive and believes "shorts may return" to Tesla after the delivery announcement as the company's acquisition of SolarCity (SCTY)progresses. The analyst keeps an Outperform rating and $338 price target on Tesla shares.

Loop Capital wonders if Trump is trying to kill Kansas City Southern
Following Monday's presidential debate, Loop Capital analyst Rick Paterson is rethinking his reluctance to believing a potential Donald Trump presidency is a threat to Kansas City Southern's business. Trump opened the debate by attacking Kansas City Southern customer Ford Motor's (F) transplanting of auto assembly plants from the U.S. to Mexico, Paterson tells investors in a research note. KSU was the best performing rail stock and the Mexican peso was 2.5% stronger the day after Hillary Clinton's debate victory, the analyst points out. He views Mexico as a "key growth engine" for both KSU and Union Pacific (UNP). Paterson cites a CNN poll for Clinton's debate victory. The analyst has a Buy rating on KSU with a $115 price target.

Further, the analyst said investors are underestimating how long the auto cycle can last and that General Motor's earnings and free cash flow could have a materially longer duration than the market is currently discounting. He believes investors are overlooking the time and steps needed for fully autonomous transport and said management has a healthy and realistic acceptance that it can't and should not do everything alone and will likely explore new business structures with the potential of positive values.

Gun sales could continue to be strong through fall, says DA Davidson
Noting that firearm background checks jumped 28.6% year-over-year last month, DA Davidson attributes the surge to the Orlando terrorist attack and subsequent efforts to pass new gun control legislation. The firm thinks that continued pro-gun control rhetoric could create "a tailwind" for gun sales through the fall. DA Davidson says that Sportsman's Warehouse's (SPWH) valuation is attractive after the stock fell over 30% so far this year. It keeps a Buy rating on the shares. Craig-Hallum calls TASER 'leader' in body cams, but notes pricing pressure
Craig-Hallum analyst Steven Dyer said he expects TASER shares to come under pressure after NYPD issued a public hearing notice for a proposed contract for TASER rival Vievu to provide 1,000 body cameras and cloud-based storage for a 1-year pilot program. In "an attempt to remain relevant," it appears Vievu is providing free body cams to 5,000 officers at the beginning and agreed to a "significantly unprofitable contract," contends Dyer, who still views TASER as the "dominant force in the domestic body-worn video market." While he will be watching for downward pressure on future body cam deals, Dyer keeps a Buy rating and $33 price target on TASER shares.

On The Fly: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Netgear (NTGR) downgraded to Hold from Buy at BWS Financial with analyst Hamed Khorsand saying shares are up approximately 100% this year and are being valued as though there could be a continuous purchasing cycle for the latest products Netgear sells, which he does not believe to be the case. 2. TASER (TASR) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Ladenburg. 3. Citrix (CTXS) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at UBS with analyst Brent Thill saying he believes the next part of the company's transition will be more difficult reflecting the GoTo spin-off; its fastest growing segment. 4. Robert Half (RHI) downgraded to Underperform from Neutral at Credit Suisse with analyst Anjaneya Singh citing fewer catalysts and increased downside risk in a slowing labor market. 5. Noble Corp. (NE) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Societe Generale with analyst Edward Muztafago citing recent share strength and lower earnings from reduced offshore spending. Heron label for Sustol could cut market by 7%, says Brean Capital
Brean Capital analyst Jonathan Aschoff points out that the label for Heron Therapeutics' Sustol does not include all of highly emetogenic chemotherapy, just 93%, because the FDA deemed that there were not enough patients on platinum-based HEC regimens in the Phase 3 trial. This may cut the target market by about 7%, but oncology doctors often prescribe drugs off-label, Aschoff tells investors in a research note. He adds that there was a "strong" response rate to Sustol in these cisplatin-treated patients. The analyst views Sustol as "highly commercially attractive" and he keeps a Buy rating on Heron with a $55 price target.

Heron Therapeutics management departures not reason for concern, says Leerink
Leerink analyst Jason Gerberry does not view the departure of three members of Heron Therapeutics' management team as reason for concern as two of the departures were "stop gap" hires, brought on to help the company through the Sustol complete response letter process, and the CFO change is being made so the company can fill the role with more of an outward facing individual. The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating on the shares.

Heron Therapeutics likely to be weak after executive departures, says Cowen
Cowen analyst Boris Peaker noted Heron Therapeutics announced the surprising resignation of three executives. The analyst said the resignations are consistent with the company's transformation to a commercial enterprise, but the fact they are a surprise will cause the stock to be weak. However, the upcoming catalysts for the company remain unchanged. Peaker reiterated his Outperform rating and $47 price target on Heron Therapeutics shares.

Leerink remains positive on Heron Therapeutics ahead of Sustol launch
Leerink analyst Jason Gerberry remains positive on Heron Therapeutics ahead of a Q4 Sustol launch in chemo induced nausea and vomiting. The analyst does not anticipate reimbursement access being an issue and notes that management has articulated a strategy for dealing with the lack of a permanent J-Code at launch. Gerberry reiterates an Outperform rating and $33 price target on the shares.

Teradata downgraded to Underperform from Buy at CLSA
CLSA analyst Ed Maquire downgraded Teradata to Underperform from Buy and cut its price target to $29 from $35. Hortonworks checks 'concerning,' quarter at risk, says Cowen
Cowen analyst J. Derrick Wood said his checks suggest there have been many high-level employee departures at Hortonworks (HDP) and he also thinks that sales productivity is constrained, presenting risk to its quarterly results. Meanwhile, he said that his checks on Teradata (TDC) remain constructive, noting that he is hearing the company is already signing orders for cloud with its core analytical database products now available on AWS. There are "some encouraging data points" for Tableau (DATA), said Wood, who added that he still has more field work to do around its quarter.

Sell
Teradata downgraded to Sell from Neutral at UBS
UBS analyst Brent Thill downgraded Teradata to Sell form Neutral as he sees downside risks to estimates as current consensus forecasts underestimate the duration and magnitude of the much-needed reset of financial expectations. Thill lowered his price target to $27 from $29 on Teradata shares.
