On The Fly: Top stock stories for Monday

Stocks opened with moderate losses and proceeded to tread water in a narrow trading range for the rest of the session. The market ended the third quarter of the year on Friday with a flurry of buying, which pushed the averages back near their all-time highs, but stocks gave back a portion of those gains in the first trading day of the fourth quarter. The volume was lighter as market participation was lower due to the celebration of the Rosh Hashanah holiday. Participation may also be impacted tomorrow as the celebration of Jewish New Year continues. ECONOMIC NEWS: In the U.S., construction spending declined 0.7% in August. The ISM manufacturing index bounced 2.1 points to 51.5 in September, above consensus of 50.2. Markit's manufacturing index fell to 51.5 for the final September print. In Europe, Markit manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index for the Eurozone rose to 52.6 in September, in line with the flash estimate. In Asia, China's official manufacturing PMI remained unchanged at 50.4 while Japan's manufacturing PMI edged up 0.1 points to 50.4 in September. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Tesla (TSLA) advanced 4.7% to $213.70 after the company gave its quarterly update on global vehicle shipments, reporting a 70% rise in third quarter deliveries alongside a 37% growth in production, leading it to reaffirm its outlook for 50,000 deliveries in the second half of 2016... The big three U.S. automakers - Ford (F), General Motors (GM) and Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) - reported sales declines during the month of September. Ford's sales dropped 8% to 204,447 vehicles, while GM and FCA US said sales were down 1% and 0.6%, respectively. Conversely, Toyota Motor (TM) and Nissan (NSANY) posted higher U.S. September sales, with the former up 1.5% to 197,260 units and the latter up 4.9% to 127,797 units. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Cabelas (CAB), which jumped 15% to $63.18 after the company agreed to be acquired by Bass Pro Shops for $65.50 per share in cash, representing an aggregate transaction value of approximately $5.5B. Additionally, Janus Capital (JNS) rose 12% after agreeing to an all-stock merger of equals with London based investment management company Henderson Group. Among the noteworthy losers was TASER (TASR), which fell 15% after the New York City Police Department was reported to award an over $6M contract for body cameras to the company's rival Vievu. Also lower was KBR (KBR), which dropped 9.9% after sharply lowering its earnings per share guidance, citing increased costs to complete engineering, procurement and construction projects. INDEXES: The Dow fell 54.30, or 0.3%, to 18,253.85, the Nasdaq slid 11.13, or 0.21%, to 5,300.87, and the S&P 500 declined 7.07, or 0.33%, to 2,161.20.

Review process of SolarCity acquisition may be delayed, says Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Colin Rusch believes the SEC review process of Tesla's (TSLA) acquisition of SolarCity (SCTY) could be delayed due to recent activity, especially new litigation. Further, the analyst believes extension to the timeline is likely to work against the deal given the risk of ongoing "collaboration to trigger gun-jumping rules." Rusch reiterates a Perform rating on Tesla's shares.

Baird estimates Tesla to report 21,000 deliveries for Q3
Baird analyst Ben Kallo said he expects Tesla (TSLA) to report its Q3 delivery figures by early next week, possibly on Monday, October 3, and he estimates the company will report 21,000 total deliveries, including 12,000 Model S deliveries and 9,000 Model X deliveries. Kallo thinks a delivery number above 20,000 vehicles will be viewed as positive and believes "shorts may return" to Tesla after the delivery announcement as the company's acquisition of SolarCity (SCTY)progresses. The analyst keeps an Outperform rating and $338 price target on Tesla shares.

Outlook mixed for Tesla, says Pacific Crest
After conducting checks, Pacific Crest analyst Brad Erickson says that orders for Tesla's Model X have improved, and he expects the company's Q3 deliveries to be "solid." However, he believes that the company is offering "aggressive" discounts on Model 3 vehicles, and he thinks the company "faces overall ASP and margin risk," along with a questionable long-term demand outlook. Erickson remains cautious on the stock and keeps a Sector Weight rating on the shares.

SolarCity deal spread offers short-term trading opportunity, says Baird
Baird analyst Ben Kallo noted the "substantial" spread between SolarCity's (SCTY) share price and Tesla's (TSLA) acquisition price and sees it as a short-term trading opportunity as he is increasingly confident that their deal will close, pinning an 80% probability on the chance that the merger occurs. Ford downgraded on an earnings peak at Buckingham
As previously reported, Buckingham downgraded Ford to Neutral from Buy and lowered its price target to $12 from $16. Loop Capital wonders if Trump is trying to kill Kansas City Southern
Following Monday's presidential debate, Loop Capital analyst Rick Paterson is rethinking his reluctance to believing a potential Donald Trump presidency is a threat to Kansas City Southern's business. Trump opened the debate by attacking Kansas City Southern customer Ford Motor's (F) transplanting of auto assembly plants from the U.S. to Mexico, Paterson tells investors in a research note. KSU was the best performing rail stock and the Mexican peso was 2.5% stronger the day after Hillary Clinton's debate victory, the analyst points out. He views Mexico as a "key growth engine" for both KSU and Union Pacific (UNP). Paterson cites a CNN poll for Clinton's debate victory. The analyst has a Buy rating on KSU with a $115 price target.

Analyst Adam Jonas raised near-term earnings estimates 5% above consensus and believes even flat earnings in 2017 and 2018 would be received as a positive surprise by the market. Further, the analyst said investors are underestimating how long the auto cycle can last and that General Motor's earnings and free cash flow could have a materially longer duration than the market is currently discounting. He believes investors are overlooking the time and steps needed for fully autonomous transport and said management has a healthy and realistic acceptance that it can't and should not do everything alone and will likely explore new business structures with the potential of positive values.

Craig-Hallum calls TASER 'leader' in body cams, but notes pricing pressure
Craig-Hallum analyst Steven Dyer said he expects TASER shares to come under pressure after NYPD issued a public hearing notice for a proposed contract for TASER rival Vievu to provide 1,000 body cameras and cloud-based storage for a 1-year pilot program. In "an attempt to remain relevant," it appears Vievu is providing free body cams to 5,000 officers at the beginning and agreed to a "significantly unprofitable contract," contends Dyer, who still views TASER as the "dominant force in the domestic body-worn video market." While he will be watching for downward pressure on future body cam deals, Dyer keeps a Buy rating and $33 price target on TASER shares.

Deutsche sees 'realistic path' to KBR becoming $20-$25 stock

The analyst, however, keeps a Hold rating on KBR with a $14 price target. The engineering and construction company closed yesterday up 10c to $14.50. Consensus estimates for 2017-2018 are too high and a reset in expectations could cause near-term price volatility, Dillard tells investors in a research note.
