On The Fly: What to watch in Micron earnings report

Micron (MU) is scheduled to report results of its fourth fiscal quarter after the market close on October 4, with a conference call scheduled for 4:30 pm ET. What to watch for: 1. POSITIVE PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT: In early September, Micron said at a tech conference hosted by Citigroup that revenue for the fourth quarter is expected to meet the upper end of its $2.9B-$3.2B guidance provided in its last earnings report. About a month later, Evercore ISI analyst C.J. Muse said that the positive pre-announcement was "just the start" of a meaningful cyclical recovery for Micron. The analyst noted that the company's many technology transitions are coinciding with a period of tightening supply and increasing prices. Muse added that investors should "expect more good news ahead" for Micron and maintained a Buy rating with a $25 price target on the stock. 2. RESTRUCTURING PLAN: Along with its last earnings report, Micron announced a restructuring plan in response to the "current business environment" and the need to shift focus toward key priorities. The company at the time said it intends to implement a cost savings program in which it expects to save roughly $80M per quarter in fiscal 2017 and anticipates incurring charges associated with the plan of $70M, mostly in cash expenditures, the majority of which is expected to be incurred in the fourth quarter of 2016. Micron noted at the time that the savings are expected to come from a combination of more focused projects and programs, the permanent closure of a number of open headcount requisition, job cuts in certain areas, and other spending reductions. 3. MORGAN SEES NOVEMBER QUARTER UPSIDE: Commenting on Micron's next quarter, Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore said that, while Micron's guidance for November will likely be conservative, the firm anticipates "substantial" November quarter upside to emerge over the next three months. The analyst said the firm recommends investors to continue buying the stock given the strong pricing backdrop and strong Dynamic Random Access Memory, or DRAM, bit growth the last two quarters, which should drive an earnings inflection higher. Moore added that he sees upside to Q1 numbers and an upward revision to his FY17 $1.22 estimates as he sees DRAM pricing continuing to be strong, with NAND a bit more mixed, for the next several quarters. The analyst rates Micron a Buy with a $20 price target on shares. 4. QUALCOMM-NXP DEAL TALKS: Last Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Qualcomm (QCOM) was in discussions to acquire NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), according to people familiar with the matter. Such a deal would likely be valued at over $30B and could be reached in the next two to three months, the Journal added. Several of other companies in the semiconductor space moved to their best levels of the session last Thursday following the report, including Micron, AMD (AMD), Intel (INTC), Marvell (MRVL), Microchip (MCHP), NVIDIA (NVDA), and Texas Instruments (TXN).

Nomura remains a Buyer of Micron, especially on weakness
Nomura analyst Romit Shah believes we are in the early part of a positive earnings revision cycle for Micron. The analyst raised his November earnings estimate to 17c, above consensus of 8c, but below "perceived" consensus of 20c-25c. Shah said DRAM's pricing outlook is the key driver as pricing and mix are improving. The analyst remains a buyer of Micron and reiterates his Buy rating and $23 price target.

Morgan Stanley continues to recommend buying Micron
Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore recommends to continue buying Micron given the strong pricing backdrop and strong DRAM bit growth the last 2 quarters, which should drive an earnings inflection higher. Moore sees upside to Q1 numbers and an upward revision to his FY17 $1.22 estimate as he expects DRAM pricing to remain strong, with NAND a bit more mixed, for the next several quarters. The analyst is not making a trade into tomorrow's report due to lack of transparency into guidance, but recommends buying shares into a strong November quarter and beyond. Moore rates Micron a Buy with a $20 price target on shares.

Micron upgraded to Buy on sustainable DRAM and NAND at Cleveland Research
As previously reported, Cleveland Research upgraded Micron to Buy from Neutral. Analyst Kevin Rottinghaus said Micron's execution has improved and progress in DRAM and NAND fundamentals over the past 2-3 months is sustainable into 2017. He sees several catalysts over the next 12 months including DRAM demand outpacing bit supply growth for CY17, improved DRAM demand outlook for computing, data center, and mobile, improving execution at 20nm, Micron appearing to be second to market with 3D SSD solutions, and NAND expected to be in tight supply through 2017. Rottinghaus expects additional material positive estimate revisions over the next 6+ months.

NXP 'cheap' for Qualcomm even after rally, says Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Rick Schafer says NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) still a "cheap" takeover target for Qualcomm (QCOM) even after rallying 25% over the past two days. An acquisition would be accretive to Qualcomm's earnings "under most scenarios," the analyst tells investors in an intraday research note. He thinks Qualcomm needs to diversify away from handsets and has $31B of offshore cash, the analyst contends. Schafer keeps a Perform rating on Qualcomm.

RBC says $120-130/share seems like high end of reasonable Qualcomm price for NXP
RBC analyst Amit Daryanani believes $120-$130 per share is likely the "upper end of the valuation framework" that Qualcomm (QCOM) would like to pay in any potential deal to acquire NXP Semiconductors (NXPI). While Qualcomm "can certainly elect to pay a larger premium" than that, doing so would likely come in the form of Qualcomm equity issuance, which would impede the accretion from the deal, Daryanani tells investors. The analyst keeps a Sector Perform rating on Qualcomm shares, but raised his price target on the stock to $70 from $59 citing the potential for diversification and higher cash flow generation that an NXP deal would provide.

NXP Semiconductors could be acquired for $124 per share, says SunTrust
After Dow Jones reported that NXP (NXPI) is in talks to be bought by Qualcomm (QCOM) for more than $95 per share, SunTrust analyst William Stein says that, based on recent takeover valuations in the semiconductor space, NXP would be acquired for $124 per share. The analyst says that NXP is worth $104 per share on a standalone basis, and he does not expect the company to sell itself for $95. Stein adds that NXP would improve Qualcomm's efforts in NFC and automotive. He expects NXP's stock to rise whether or not a deal is made, and he keeps a Buy rating on the shares.
