On The Fly: Top stock stories for Wednesday

Stocks began the session in positive territory and remained there throughout the day. There was little movement in the averages once they found a level shortly after the open. The day's economic reports had little effect on the market as investors looked toward Friday's monthly jobs report. Oil continued to extend its rally as the weekly inventory report showed a drawdown of supply versus analyst expectations for a build. Also impacting oil prices was the potential land fall of Hurricane Matthew as concerns are growing about potential supply disruption. WTI crude oil is now approaching $50 per barrel, its highest level since June, while gold remains near its lowest level since June. ECONOMIC NEWS: In the U.S., ADP estimated that private payrolls increased 154,000 in September, below consensus expectations for the 165,000 jobs to have been added. The U.S. trade deficit rose more than expected in August to $40.7B. Markit's services PMI climbed to 52.3 in the final September print. The ISM non-manufacturing index surged to 57.1 in September. Factory orders edged up 0.2% in August, above expectations for a decline of 0.2% for the month. Crude oil inventories showed a 2.98M barrel draw, versus the consensus forecast for a 1.5M barrel build. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH) dropped 3.8% following media reports saying the FBI arrested an NSA contractor, who worked for the company, and is looking into whether he stole and disclosed classified computer codes made to hack into the networks of foreign governments. Commenting on the arrest in a regulatory filing, Booz Allen Hamilton said when it learned of the arrest the company immediately reached out to the authorities to offer "total cooperation in their investigation," and fired the employee. This is second incident of its sort involving a Booz Allen employee, following the case of the now-infamous Edward Snowden... Shares of Salesforce (CRM) slipped 5.8% on prospects that it may buy Twitter (TWTR), as speculated to be a possibility in a new Wall Street Journal report and several prior press accounts. According to the reports, the company is among the bidders for the microblog service operator, alongside Alphabet (GOOG; GOOGL) and Disney (DIS). Conversely, Twitter rose 5.8% on the Journal's account that the company is expected to field takeover offers this week... Shares of Micron Technology (MU) slid 0.6% after the company reported better than expected fourth quarter results. However, was weighed on by concerns regarding its guidance, with Wall Street analysts pointing out that the memory-chip maker's higher than expected quarterly forecast was due to a change in some of its accounting practices... Also higher after earnings is Constellation Brands (STZ), which rose 1.7% after reporting better than expected second quarter earnings per share and revenue. Shares of Monsanto (MON) also advanced 1.6% after the seeds and agrochemicals company, which agreed last month to be bought by Bayer (BAYRY) for $66B, reported a surprise adjusted profit, helped by a drop in expenses and higher corn seed volumes. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Acacia Communications (ACIA), which gained 11% after issuing third quarter earnings and revenue guidance that topped consensus forecasts. Also higher was Endurance Specialty (ENH), which rose 4.4% after agreeing to be acquired by Japan's Sompo Holdings for $93 per share in cash. Among the noteworthy losers was Gigamon (GIMO), which slid 6% after being downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Raymond James and to Neutral from Buy at DA Davidson. Also lower was AZZ (AZZ), which dropped 14% after the company reported quarterly results that drastically missed analyst estimates for the quarter. INDEXES: The Dow rose 112.58, or 0.62%, to 18,281.03, the Nasdaq gained 26.36, or 0.5%, to 5,316.02, and the S&P 500 advanced 9.24, or 0.43%, to 2,159.73.

BMO says Salesforce's positive messages overshadowed by Twitter speculation
BMO Capital analyst Keith Bachman said the positive themes laid out by Salesforce (CRM) management at the company's Dreamforce event, such as guidance to reach $10B in FY18 revenues without inorganic sources of revenue, would traditionally help the stock. However, news reports, including the most recent from the Wall Street Journal, indicating that the company may buy Twitter (TWTR), will outweigh the "positive messages" of the event. If Salesforce were to buy Twitter, the stock would move meaningfully lower, Bachman predicted, but he also wonders if strategic buyers would then potentially consider buying Salesforce. The firm keeps its Outperform rating on Salesforce shares.

Stifel still sees Salesforce acquisition of Twitter as 'highly unlikely'
Stifel analyst Tom Roderick notes that Salesforce (CRM) kicked off its annual Dreamforce User Conference yesterday amid reports that the company may be a potential suitor for Twitter (TWTR). The analyst still believes that a Salesforce acquisition of Twitter is "highly unlikely," both from a logistical standpoint and from a business model fit perspective. Regarding fundamentals, Roderick continues to view Salesforce as a leading driver of the enterprise shift to the Cloud, and sees no reason why that shouldn't continue to play out in the second half of 2017, in spite of recent concerns about the mid-year slowdown. He reiterates a Buy rating and $93 price target on Salesforce's shares.

JPMorgan backs Overweight rating on Salesforce as Twitter speculation gears up
JPMorgan analyst Mark Murphy noted that speculation that Salesforce (CRM) could buy Twitter (TWTR) has ratcheted up into a higher gear, fueled by the latest report from the WSJ, and acknowledges the risk of a setback if the company goes forward with such a transformational M&A deal. However, he still views Salesforce as a "rare cloud asset" that can be a long-term share gainer and keeps an Overweight rating and $95 price target on the shares.

Salesforce acquisition of Twitter 'quite low,' says BofA/Merrill
BofA/Merrill analyst Kash Rangan said the probability of Salesforce (CRM) acquiring Twitter (TWTR) is "quite low." The analyst does not believe Salesforce would materially dilute its shareholders with such a risky deal and expects the CEO to provide clarity on the thought process behind core software acquisitions versus media at today's Q&A session. Rangan rates Salesforce a Buy with a $100 price target on shares.

Twitter worries obscuring positive trends for Salesforce, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Steve Koenig said his industry and partner checks don't point to any secular headwinds for Salesforce's (CRM) business, adding that the company gave several reassuring metrics on its progress in cross-selling, growing deal sizes, and expanding its large account base at its investor day event at the Dreamforce conference. At the investor day, management acknowledged conjecture about Salesforce trying to buy Twitter (TWTR), but deflected comments, with CFO Mark Hawkins suggesting that CEO Marc Benioff's Q&A session Wednesday afternoon may be a better forum for soliciting comments, noted Koenig. The analyst, who remains constructive on Salesforce as long as the company doesn't buy Twitter, keeps an Outperform rating on the shares.

Avon Products (AVP) downgraded to Neutral at Piper Jaffray by analyst Stephanie Wissink, who said Avon's topline growth now relies almost exclusively on international markets, where economic uncertainty persists. 3. Booz Allen (BAH) downgraded to Market Perform at Raymond James with analyst Brian Gesuale saying near-term consensus expectations are overly optimistic in terms of growth, despite management cautioning about needing time to staff recent contract wins and incremental investments required to drive long-term growth. 4. He adds that Hertz indicated that weaker pricing would cause revenue per available car day to decline 2.5%-3.5%. 5. Impact on Booz Allen from employee arrest unclear, says Cowen
Cowen analyst Cai von Rumohr said it is still unclear what impact the recent arrest of a Booz Allen employee alleged to have stolen classified computer codes while contracted at the NSA may have on the company. Since this incident is the second of its sort involving a Booz Allen employee, after Edward Snowden, it could have an impact on the company's brand image, the analyst said. However, von Rumohr noted that Booz Allen did not face any litigation, lose any contracts, or have any direct impact on its revenues in the wake of the Snowden incident and that its shares bounced back relatively quickly after the fall associated with that event. The firm keeps an Outperform rating on Booz Allen shares.

Mizuho cuts Twitter to Underperform with $15 price target
Mizuho analyst Neil Doshi downgraded Twitter to Underperform from Neutral based on valuation. The shares are up 45% since the company reported Q2 results, primarily driven by potential buyout comments in media reports, Doshi tells investors in a research note. The stock at current levels is overvalued as Twitter's business fundamentals "have deteriorated significantly" over the past 12 months, the analyst contends. Doshi believes many of the M&A scenarios are unlikely to play out. He puts potential acquirers Salesforce (CRM) and Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) in the "maybe" camp, but he still has some reservations about these deals happening. The analyst believes investors of both companies would view a buyout of Twitter as negative. Doshi keeps a $15 price target for Twitter shares. The stock closed yesterday up 35c to $23.72. Citi sees 40% downside in Twitter with no takeover bid
Citi analyst Mark May believes Twitter's (TWTR) risk/reward skews to the downside following the recent rally in the shares. A buyout of the company carries "strategic rationale for certain companies," but Twitter's "struggles and steep valuation" make a deal at a meaningful premium less likely, May tells investors in a research note. A takeover at $26 per share looks aggressive, May contends. He believes the stock could retest the lows of late May, representing 40% downside from current levels, should an acquisition offer not materialize. The analyst keeps a Neutral rating on Twitter with a $16 price target. The shares closed yesterday up 75c to $23.37 following reports that Disney (DIS) may be joining the list of potential acquires that already includes Alphabet (GOOG) and Salesforce (CRM).

Citi hopes Disney does not acquire Twitter
Citi analyst Jason Bazinet lays out four reasons for why he doesn't like Disney (DIS) pursuing an acquisition of Twitter (TWTR). Going back 15 years, the analyst can't think of a single web-based property that was successfully acquired by a traditional media firm. Two, he calls Twitter trends "troubling." Three, Bazinet estimates a cash offer would lower Disney's stock by $5 per share while an equity offer would drop its stock by $9. Four, the analyst feels it is unclear how Disney's content will help Twitter. Bazinet thinks both Yahoo (YHOO) and Twitter lost "significant money" when they streamed NFL content over the web. The analyst hopes Twitter is acquired by somebody other than Disney. He keeps a Buy rating on Disney shares. Both Loop Capital and Mizuho this morning downgraded Twitter to sell ratings.

Nokia, Alcatel-Lucent win positive for optical component companies, says Needham
Needham analyst Alex Henderson says that Alcatel-Lucent (ALU)/Nokia (NOK) announcement of a major contract win to build over 30% share of China Mobile's (CHL) 2016-2017 new construction of optical network is also a major positive for optical component companies such as Oclaro (OCLR), NeoPhotonics (NPTN), Fabrinet (FN), Lumentum (LITE), Inphi (IPHI), and Acacia (ACIA). Henderson thinks this is likely the first of three major awards in China, which will likely result in the current sold-out conditions in the coherent optical market to stretch out well into 2017.

Acacia Communications price target raised ot $130 from $88 at BofA/Merrill
BofA/Merrill analyst Tal Llani raised Acacia Communications' price target to $130 from $88 to reflect potential share gains and TAM expansion. Needham remains a buyer of NeoPhotonics ahead of analyst day
Needham analyst Alex Henderson believes NeoPhotonics (NPTN) is "exceptionally well positioned" for strong results over the next 3-4 quarters. The analyst "aggressively recommends" investors Buy NeoPhotonics' shares before the company's analyst day on September 8. Further, Henderson thinks Acacia's (ACIA) over $4B market cap will likely drive them to be acquisitive, and notes that it may seek to reduce costs as a percent of revenues by a potential acquisition of, for example, NeoPhotonics or Oclaro (OCLR). He reiterates a Strong Buy rating and $20 price target on NeoPhotonics' shares.

Acacia Communications price target raised to $125 from $90 at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Vijay Bhagavath raised his price target for Acacia Communications to $125 from $90 after joining the company's CEO and CFO in a non-deal roadshow. The analyst sees "little risk" to Q3 estimates given solid near-term order visibility in Datacenter Optical and China Metro build outs. The consensus view of Acacia's total addressable market at $4B is conservative and does not factor in up-sell into a $1B-$2B 100G Switching and Routing market, Bhagavath tells investors in a research note. He reiterates a Buy rating on the shares. Acacia closed yesterday down $2.31 to $117.89.
