Sprint to let Galaxy Note 7 owners trade phones for other devices, Recode says

Spring (S) will let Samsung (SSNLF) Galaxy Note 7 owners exchange their device for any other type of smartphone, Recode reports. Sprint's move comes as Samsung and regulators are investigating an incident in which a replacement Note 7 ignited before a flight. A Sprint representative says that "If a Sprint customer with a replacement Note 7 has any concerns regarding their device, we will exchange it for any other device at any Sprint retail store during the investigation window." T-Mobile (TMUS) continues to sell the devices, but says customers with a replacement device or new Note 7 can exchange it under the company's standard "remorse" policy that lets customers return devices within 14 days.Reference Link

Piper survey shows decline in iPhone upgrade interest
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says his firm's survey of 403 U.S. iPhone owners suggests that interest in an iPhone 7 upgrade declined after the announcement of the device. The data contradicts "generally positive" initial demand indicators including from carriers including T-Mobile (TMUS) and Sprint (S), Munster tells investors in a research note. The analyst questions iPhone 7 demand into Apple's (AAPL) March and June quarters but remains confident in his thinking for flattish growth for iPhone 7 versus iPhone 6. Munster reiterates an Overweight rating on Apple.

SoftBank downgraded to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Peter Milliken downgraded Softbank (SFTBY) to Hold saying the company's rebuilding efforts should take time. The analyst expects the stock to trade largely in line with Alibaba (BABA), Sprint (S) and the yen over the next 12 months, and he feels much of the upside has already been realized in the first two.

Apple iPhone 7 strength consistent with view, says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst Maynard Um says the iPhone 7 pre-order strength announced by T-Mobile (TMUS) and Sprint (S) is consistent with his view that "aggressive carrier promotions" should help to drive sales of the next generation phone. Um still expects Apple's multiple expansion to be limited given the "limited visibility and some concern into the March quarter." The analyst keeps a Market Perform rating on Apple shares with a $105-$120 price target range.

Credit Suisse raises Apple iPhone estimates on survey, carrier comments
Credit Suisse analyst Kulbinder Garcha said that build plans noted by the firm's tech team in Japan, the firm's proprietary iPhone survey and recent announcements from Sprint (S) and T-Mobile (TMUS) all lead him to now believe that Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 7 cycle may be stronger than anticipated. Accordingly, Garcha increased his calendar year 2016 iPhone volume estimate to 215M from 208M and took his calendar year 2017 estimate up to 221M units from 217M units. Additionally, two recent surveys conducted by the firm point to a potential beneficial mix shift, as more buyers appear to be shifting toward the Plus model compared to the mix in the iPhone 6s cycle, Garcha tells investors. The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating and $150 price target on Apple shares, which closed yesterday at $111.77.

Fitbit faces 'fight of its life,' GoPro Karma delay a problem, says BlueFin
In an update on the wearable space, BlueFin analysts John Donovan and Steve Mullane make the case that Fitbit (FIT) is "in for the fight of its life" given mounting competition that is coming from Samsung (SSNLF), Apple (AAPL), Garmin (GRMN) and Under Armour (UA), adding that the sizable inventory of Alta and Blaze devices that it must deplete in this competitive environment puts Fitbit is in a "precarious position." The analyst add that Apple's watchOS improvements "further paint Fitbit into a corner," but noted that market data suggests consumers are looking for wearables under $200, which is in the "sweet spot" of Fitbit's portfolio. Weighing in on GoPro (GPRO), the analysts wonder if the Hero5 will be compelling enough to make consumers buy another camera and note that its upcoming Karma drone is very late to market and "facing daunting odds."

Digital Turbine estimates, price target reduced at Roth Capital
Roth Capital analyst Brian Alger reduced his estimates for Digital Turbine (APPS) and lowered his price target on the shares to $2.60 from $3, after the company quantified the miss that it had previewed last month. The shortfall was attributed to the slashed digital ad budget of a large advertising customer, Verizon (VZ) choosing to reduce the number of slots per device for much of the March quarter, and to Verizon Samsung S7's (SSNLF) that have yet to have Ignite software included, the analyst tells investors in a research note. Alger reiterates a Buy rating on Digital Turbine's shares, considering the depressed current valuation.

Apple supply chain names to rebound, says Needham
Needham analyst Rajvindra Gill expects a rebound in the Apple (AAPL) supply chain names given its underperformance over the last 25 days and the relatively good quarterly results from Knowles (KN). Among the names, the analyst sees Cirrus Logic (CRUS) increasing its dollar content per unit about 40% for the iPhone 7 cycle, with possible upside of 80%-100% for the iPhone 7S in 2017 with the inclusion of adaptive noise cancellation. Knowles, which generated 25% of sales from Apple and less than 10% of sales from Samsung (SSNLF), posted better-than-expected results and guidance, the analyst tells investors in a research note.

Apple preparing for next era of personal technology, says UBS
UBS analyst Steve Milunovich notes his residual income model for Apple shows only small growth beyond three years. He believes the current share price reflects the slight annual declines but he thinks the cautious view would be incorrect because Apple is preparing for the next era of personal technology. Milunovich calls the next phase the Ambient Paradigm, which will require hardware, software, and orchestration to provide a seamless experience across all consumer devices. The Apple Watch, AirPods, and possibly other wearables will eventually impact industries such as healthcare and education and could be the next scarcity, said Milunovich, who reiterated his Buy rating and $127 price target on Apple shares.

Citi says Salesforce buying Twitter 'nearly impossible' above $28/share
Citi analyst Walter Pritchard believes a Salesforce (CRM) acquisition of Twitter (TWTR) is possible financially but that such a deal would put "significant constraints" on the company for the next three-plus years. The analyst sees "very little reason" for Salesforce to own Twitter and feels the acquisition "would pose a difficult decision" for CEO Marc Benioff and the board. Salesforce closed yesterday down 6%, or $4.21, to $68.42. Recode reported last night that the company is likely the only bidder left for Twitter after Disney (DIS) and Alphabet (GOOG) opted not to pursue a deal while Apple (AAPL) is unlikely. Twitter in pre-market trading is down 14% to $21.50. In order for Salesforce to avoid a shareholder vote, it would have to borrow $7.5B to fund the transaction if Twitter were valued at $20B, or $27.50-$28 per share, Pritchard tells investors in a research note. This is a level that likely constrains the company with little additional borrowing capacity for other deals, the analyst contends. He thinks the deal is "nearly impossible to do" for Salesforce should the bidding for Twitter go above $20B or $28 per share. Pritchard has a Buy rating on Salesforce with an $89 price target.

T-Mobile should be bought at current levels, says Pacific Crest
Pacific Crest analyst Michael Bowen says that investors may be concerned about T-Mobile's failure to raise its annual guidance despite strong preliminary Q3 subscription metrics. SunTrust sees 'limited' list of Twitter suitors, says activist action unlikely
SunTrust analyst Robert Peck reiterated his belief that Twitter (TWTR) is unlikely to sell itself in 2016 in a new note to investors, but noted that investors have asked him who would be interested if Twitter were open to a sale. While giving his opinion on potential acquirers - which he sees possibly including Google (GOOG), Facebook (FB), Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), Disney (DIS), Fox (FOXA), and Alibaba (BABA) - Peck said the company's high price and "unique" asset limit the potential buyers and gave his view that a PE buyer is highly unlikely given the company's lack of free cash flow. Additionally, Peck thinks activist action at Twitter seems "extremely unlikely" despite "unsubstantiated investor conjecture" and media reports. The analyst keeps Neutral rating and $18 price target on Twitter shares.

Yahoo hack is probably not a material adverse change, says SunTrust
After Yahoo (YHOO) reported that over 500M of its accounts had been hacked, SunTrust analyst Robert Peck thinks that the news is probably not a material adverse change, or MAC, that would jeopardize the company's acquisition by Verizon (VZ). He notes that the sales contract says that a MAC will not be triggered by "any failure by Yahoo to meet its internal or published projections, budgets, plans, or forecasts of its revenues, earnings, or other financial performance or results of operations." The analyst says that the hack "may be manageable," since a majority of the victims could be e-mail users who are sticky. He keeps a Neutral rating on Yahoo.

BofA thinks Verizon deal stays on track despite Yahoo data breach
Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Justin Post said that Yahoo's (YHOO) disclosure of the massive data breach impacting over 500M of its users is clearly a negative for the company that could result in email account closures, but he does not anticipate a major impact on Yahoo's business related to this breach, citing as evidence the fact that he is not aware of any significant business impairment or financial liability related to security breaches at LinkedIn (LNKD) in 2012 and at eBay (EBAY) in 2014. Post adds that the Target (TGT) data breach, which did include credit card info, is not directly comparable to Yahoo's breach. For Verizon (VZ) to back out of its acquisition agreement, Post thinks the company would need to assume Yahoo acted in bad faith during negotiations and that the Yahoo asset is impaired or comes with significant liability, neither of which he sees as being the case. The analyst keeps a Buy rating on Yahoo and bumped his target on the shares to $55 from $53, citing an increased price target on Alibaba (BABA) that a peer at the firm recently set.
