Germany says state support for Deutsche Bank 'inconceivable,' WSJ reports

Aides to Chancellor Angela Merkel have told German lawmakers that it is "inconceivable" that the country would take a stake in Deutsche Bank, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing a person who attended a confidential, closed-door briefing with a small group of lawmakers. The fact that Merkel has ruled out any aid for the bank will come as a "negative surprise to investors," the Journal added. Deutsche Bank shares trading in New York have dipped following the report, while many other bank stocks are rising today following earnings reports from a number of big name U.S. banks. DoJ will not destabilize Deutsche Bank, says Cowen
Cowen analyst Jaret Seiberg sees little practical or political upside for the Justice Department to press Deutsche Bank for a penalty that is so large it could destabilize the bank and create a new financial crisis. He expects the penalty for violations related to mortgage-backed securities to be structured below the speculated $14B that seems to have alarmed the market. Seiberg adds both sides have incentives to reach a deal quickly.
