Solid earnings lift stocks in early trading
Stock futures were strong throughout the pre-market trading session, thanks in part to solid reports from IBM (IBM), United Continental (UAL) and Netflix (NFLX) last night and from Goldman Sachs (GS) and UnitedHealth (UNH) this morning. The futures action led to a higher open for the broader market, which has been alternating between gains and losses daily over the past week. About an hour and a half into the trading session the averages are near their best levels, with the Dow up 78 points, the Nasdaq up 50 points and the S&P up 12 points.
