On The Fly: Top stock stories at midday

The market opened in positive territory and has remained there throughout the morning. The Nasdaq remains the strongest of the indices, as it is higher by more than 1% versus the Dow's gain of closer to 0.5%. The Dow, however, is being weighed on by IBM (IBM) shares, which are down more than 3.5% in reaction to Big Blue's earnings report. ECONOMIC NEWS: In the U.S., the consumer price index rose 0.3% in September, matching expectations, while the core CPI excluding food and energy components was up 0.1%, versus expectations for a core CPI increase of 0.2%. The National Association of Home Builders' sentiment index dipped 2 points to 63 in October, as expected. In Europe, the U.K. consumer price index rose 1% in September, hitting its highest level since November 2014. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Netflix (NFLX) jumped more than 19% near noon after the company reported third quarter revenue and profit that beat expectations and added over 50% more subscribers than expected as original shows such as "Stranger Things" and "Narcos" drew international viewers and kept domestic users despite a recent price increase... Also higher after earnings is UnitedHealth (UNH), which advanced over 7% after the company announced better than expected revenue and profits and raised its full year outlook... Conversely, shares of IBM have dropped almost 4% despite posting better than expected sales on cloud and analytics growth... After JPMorgan (JPM), Wells Fargo (WFC), Citigroup (C) and Bank of America (BAC), this morning was Goldman Sachs' (GS) turn to report quarterly results. The bank's commitment to fixed income trading paid off in the third quarter, with revenue from the business surging 49% as the company beat expectations. Shares of Goldman Sachs are up about 2% after the announcement. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Del Taco Restaurants (TACO), which advanced 9% after the company reported better than expected third quarter earnings and revenue. Also higher after earnings was Domino's Pizza (DPZ), which gained more than 7% after the company reported a 25% jump in profit, helped by strong sales and an expanding number of stores. Among the noteworthy losers was Badger Meter (BMI), which slipped about 10.5% after the company reported lower than expected earnings and revenue for the quarter. Also lower after earnings was Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), which slid more than 2% despite announcing slightly better than expected quarterly results and boosting its full-year outlook. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was up 106.05, or 0.59%, to 18,192.45, the Nasdaq was up 61.15, or 1.18%, to 5,260.98, and the S&P 500 was up 17.08, or 0.8%, to 2,143.58.

Needham sees Netflix programming pivot as 'key story' of the quarter
Needham analyst Laura Martin notes that Netflix beat revenue, subscriber guidance and estimates in Q3, and sees its programming pivot as the key story of the quarter. Although the pivot toward more owned programming hurts margins and free cash flow in the near term, the analyst likes the fact that Netflix is now building a content library. Intel upgraded to Buy from Hold at Evercore ISI
Evercore ISI analyst C.J. Muse upgraded Intel (INTC) to Buy and raised his price target for the shares to $45 from $38. The chipmaker closed Friday up 6c to $36.08. Fears of a slowdown in its Server business and sustained weakness in PCs have led Intel shares to underperform peers thus far in 2016, Muse tells investors in a research note. The analyst expects the underperformance to change as the company's Data Center Group segment accelerates to 10%+plus growth in the second half of 2016. Further, Muse thinks Intel's "competitive moat remains" despite potential competition from ARM Holdings (ARMH) and IBM's (IBM) Power9 architecture. He sees 25% upside in Intel shares from current levels.

Speculation suggests Imperva takeover in 'near sight,' says Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Shaul Eyal is not surprised to see the list of potential Imperva (IMPV) buyer candidates mentioned in an article from Bloomberg, which includes Cisco (CSCO), IBM (IBM), Fortinet (FTNT), Akamai (AKAM), and privately held Forcepoint. The analyst envisions Imperva's product line aligning particularly well with Cisco's and IBM's given the recent drive by both to expand their security offerings. Eyal sees a potential price target ranging between $55-$60 if the speculation has any merit and sufficient interest from multiple bidders. Oppenheimer has an Outperform rating on Imperva's shares.

LabCorp weakness a buying opportunity, says Canaccord
Canaccord analyst Mark Massaro noted LabCorp (LH) shares sold off yesterday on news that its rival, Quest Diagnostics (DGX), announced a partnership with Optum, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth (UNH). Massaro expects LabCorp to deliver steady quarterly beats and said the company is well positioned to capture its losses in the second half of 2016. Evercore says UnitedHealth displaces Aetna for managed care deal in Missouri
Analysts at Evercore ISI noted that Centene (CNC) and Wellcare (WCG) announced managed care contract awards in Missouri, where they are incumbents. The firm also said that the state's contract database names UnitedHealth (UNH) as the third winner, replacing the third incumbent, Aetna (AET). The firm assumes that Centene and Wellcare will retain their existing lives and that Aetna's current lives and the expansion lives will be divided evenly among the three contract awardees. Evercore said it assumed a Missouri renewal for Centene and views the win as removing downside risk, adding that the loss is "manageable" for Aetna but could raise concerns about the Medicaid business in general.

Johnson & Johnson weakness creates buying opportunity, says RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Glenn Novarro says that Johnson & Johnson underperformed the market in Q3 due to a number of factors including Remicade biosimilar risk and the pharma pricing debate. The analyst says that "these concerns are manageable/overblown," and he expects the company to report strong Q3 results, driven by a strong pharma performance. Novoroo expects the company's Q3 revenue to come in slightly above expectations, and he predicts that the company will narrow its 2016 EPS guidance to the high end of the previous range. Ramsden's analysis suggests growth in higher return businesses, such as credit cards and wealth management, and expense discipline will not be enough to increase ROE all the way to its 10% target. Conviction Sell
Bank of America operating leverage hitting an inflection, says Goldman
Goldman analyst Richard Ramsden believes Bank of America is hitting an inflection point in operating leverage driven by low single digit growth, stable credit, and absolute reductions in the expense base. The analyst believes topline growth will reach approximately 4% annually through to 2018, driven by consumer bank and wealth management initiatives. Ramsden reiterates his Conviction Buy rating on Bank of American and raised his price target to $19 from $17 given the combination of revenue growth and expense discipline.
