Qualcomm unveils first commercial 5G modem
As part of a series of announcements made yesterday at its 4G/5G Summit in Hong Kong, Qualcomm unveiled the "Snapdragon X50 5G modem," making it the first company to announce a commercial 5G modem chipset. The X50 is designed for the next generation of cellular devices and will support peak download speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second. "The Snapdragon X50 5G modem heralds the arrival of 5G as operators and OEMs reach the cellular network and device testing phase," the company remarked. Sampling for the Snapdragon X50 5G modem is expected to begin in 2H17. The first commercial products that will integrate the Snapdragon X50 5G modem are expected to be available during 1H18. Separately, the company also unveiled the Snapdragon 653, Snapdragon 626 and Snapdragon 427 mobile processors, featuring improved battery charging and dual camera technologies.
