On The Fly: Top stock stories at midday

The major averages remain mixed near noon, with the Nasdaq rising, the Dow slipping and the S&P mildly higher. The economic strength evidenced by the retail sales report had many market observers commenting that this solidifies the chances that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates next month, as has been widely expected for some time. ECONOMIC NEWS: In the U.S., retail sales climbed 0.8% in October, and rose 0.6% excluding autos and gas, both stronger than forecast. Import prices rose 0.5% in October, with export prices up 0.2%. The Empire State manufacturing index rose 8.3 points to 1.5 in November after dropping 4.8 points to -6.8 in October. Business inventories edged up 0.1% in September, with sales up 0.7%, exactly as forecast. In Europe, German GDP rose 0.2%, below the expected 0.3%. U.K. CPI fell to 0.9% in October, missing forecasts for 1.1%. Eurozone GDP rose 0.3% in the third quarter, in line with market expectations. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Home Depot (HD) have dropped about 2.5% despite the company beating earnings and sales expectations, powered by an increase in both the number of people who made purchases and the amount that shoppers spent. Additionally, the home improvement retailer raised its full-year earnings per share guidance... Also lower after earnings was TJX Companies (TJX), sliding a little over 1%. The discount retailer, which owns the T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods chains, posted better than expected third quarter results, but its fourth quarter forecast was hampered by expectations of negative currency impacts and higher wages... American Airlines (AAL), Delta Airlines (DAL), and United Continental (UAL), were up a respective 3%, 0.5%, and 3% after Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) disclosed new stakes in the airlines in its quarterly filing. Southwest Airlines (LUV) was also up almost 2% near noon after CNBC reported that Warren Buffett's Berkshire took a stake in that airline as well. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was JD.com (JD), which advanced over 13% after quarterly report showed a smaller than expected loss for the Chinese online direct sales company. Also higher was Advance Auto Parts (AAP), which gained about 15% after the company reported better than expected results helped by same-store sales that fell less than expected. Among the noteworthy losers was Sally Beauty (SBH), which slipped almost 12% after the company announced in line earnings per share and weaker than expected revenue for the quarter. Following the earnings release, Raymond James downgraded the stock to Underperform. Also lower was Dicks Sporting Goods (DKS), which slid about 9% after the sports retailer said fourth quarter results may not meet analyst expectations. Additionally, Amplify Snack Brands (BETR) has dropped almost 25% after the company reported worse than expected adjusted earnings per share for the quarter. Oppenheimer and Credit Suisse downgraded the stock to neutral-equivalent ratings following the news. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was down 22.74, or 0.12%, to 18,845.95, the Nasdaq was up 43.69, or 0.84%, to 5,262.08, and the S&P 500 was up 7.93, or 0.37%, to 2,172.13.

Lowe's price target lowered to $80 from $94 at Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Brian Nagel lowered his price target for Lowe's (LOW) to $80 from $94 on valuation. The analyst notes that "softish reports" from Home Improvement related manufacturers and suppliers have sparked investor concern that a weaker spending environment has finally caught up with the company and Home Depot (HD). However, Nagel believes any sales weakness that occurred late summer is more of a "blip" than the beginning of a "sales downshift" for the sector, and recommends clients use recent share price weakness as a buying opportunity. He reiterates an Outperform rating on Lowe's shares. Nagel also lowered his price target for Home Depot.

Airlines initiated at Bernstein
Bernstein analyst David Vernon initiated coverage of the U.S. airline sector, saying that he is "bullish on the sector" and asserting that it has "favorable..dynamics." He expects the sector's stocks to have "higher average highs and higher average lows over time," driven partly by its investments in return enhancing programs, revenue enhancing initiatives, and "a stronger outlook for longer term capital return" which isn't reflected in valuation, according to the analyst. Vernon recommends owning airlines that have "less financial and operating leverage." He says that he is "favorably disposed" to Southwest (LUV) and Delta Air Lines (DAL), which he says have high returns and low leverage, and is less upbeat on United Continental (UAL), which he says has higher operating leverage and execution risk. He is bearish on American Airlines (AAL), as he thinks that its capacity growth and financial leverage create significant risk. The analyst started coverage of Southwest with an Outperform rating and a $51 price target. He initiated coverage of Delta and United Continental with Market Perform ratings and $43 and $55 price targets, respectively. He launched American with a $31 price target and Underperform rating.

Amplify Snack Brands downgraded to Neutral on Q3 missteps at Credit Suisse
As previously reported, Credit Suisse downgraded Amplify Snack Brands to Neutral and lowered its price target to $13 from $18. Analyst Robert Moskow said the Q3 miss and lowered guidance was a result of a series of execution missteps that will require bigger investments, in addition to increased competitive headwinds that raises concerns about the sustainability of the growth rate.
