Canada Retail Sales Preview: Analysts expect retail sales
Canada Retail Sales Preview: Analysts expect retail sales to rise 0.6% in September after the 0.1% dip in August. The ex-autos sales aggregate is seen expanding 0.4% in September after the flat reading in August. Gasoline prices edged 0.8% higher in September after the 0.9% decline in August, according to the CPI . Hence analysts should see the gasoline station sales component exert a modest boost on total and ex-autos sales. Vehicle sales were slightly firmer in September (173.5k) relative to August (172.0k), according to the vehicle industry sales figures compiled by Desrosiers. Of course, the industry figures are not seasonally adjusted. The figures in the retail sales report are adjusted for seasonality, which often leads to discrepancies. An as expected gain September retail sales that is accompanied by an improvement in the "real" (price adjusted) sales basis would be supportive of our view that GDP will see further growth in September of 0.1%.
