Box Office Battle: 'Moana' to surf to top spot during Thanksgiving weekend

The major release opening this five-day Thanksgiving weekend is Disney's (DIS) "Moana," an animated fantasy adventure film starring Dwayne Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho. The film, which brought in $2.6M from Tuesday night screenings in North America, is expected to lead the extended weekend with a potential domestic gross of about $85M, according to Box Office Mojo. Also opening this weekend is "Allied," a World War II thriller from Viacom's (VIA) Paramount starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, which is looking set for third place at the box office with a domestic gross of about $25M for the long weekend. In addition, Fox's (FOX) romantic comedy-drama film "Rules Don't Apply," directed by and starring Warren Beatty, is expected to gross roughly $4.8M in its debut over the five day period. Warner Bros. (TWX) "Harry Potter" prequel "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," which achieved the top spot at the box office last weekend after grossing $75M domestically in its debut, is expected to reach second place this Thanksgiving weekend with a five-day nationwide gross of $58M. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Sony (SNE), Lionsgate (LGF), and Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK). PIPER UPBEAT ON 'MOANA' DEBUT: Ahead of the film's theatrical release, Piper Jaffray analysts Michael Olson and Stephanie Wissink said they view Disney's "Moana" as the "de-facto choice" for most families during the Thanksgiving weekend. The analysts said they expect the movie to gross $75M-$80M domestically in the extended weekend and that the film's Rotten Tomatoes launch score of 100% should ensure "strong" performance through the end of December. Olson and Wissink also noted that, while upbeat on the box office performance of "Moana," they view the movie as less of a "toyetic" event based on current product placement and the un-seasonal topic of the film. The analysts added, however, that there is no direct competition in the animated film space to the new Disney movie in its first weekend besides Fox's "Trolls," which the analysts note has "largely completed its run," and that competition overall remains limited through December 21st, when Universal's "Sing" is scheduled for release.

Disney upgraded to Buy from Hold at Deutsche Bank

Citi views Disney's moves as blunting the bear thesis
Citi analyst Jason Bazinet believes Disney in 2016 made three "bold' announcements that are yet to be fully developed by the Street. First, the company in Q2 acquired a 33% stake in BAMTech. Second, it suggested it would use Hulu to launch a sports-centric linear TV service in early 2017. And third, management suggested they would launch a niche sports service for out-of-market games. These strategic pivots blunt the bear case which is centered on cord cutters, Bazinet tells investors in a research note. Disney bears are focused on the 2% of U.S. households that terminate their pay TV subscription each year, the analyst writes. He estimates that absent steps by Disney, cord cutting creates a financial headwind of about $300M a year. With Disney's three announcements, however, the $300M headwind could shrink each year and actually turn into a $100M EBIT tailwind by 2020, the analyst contends. Bazinet keeps a Buy rating on Disney with a $117 price target.

Consumer satisfaction with competitors has caught up to Netflix, says UBS

SunTrust sees 'limited' list of Twitter suitors, says activist action unlikely

While giving his opinion on potential acquirers - which he sees possibly including Google (GOOG), Facebook (FB), Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), Disney (DIS), Fox (FOXA), and Alibaba (BABA) - Peck said the company's high price and "unique" asset limit the potential buyers and gave his view that a PE buyer is highly unlikely given the company's lack of free cash flow. Additionally, Peck thinks activist action at Twitter seems "extremely unlikely" despite "unsubstantiated investor conjecture" and media reports. Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says August NPD video game software sales were up 1% year-over-year, driven by Sony (SNE) publishing No Man's Sky and Electronic Arts' (EA) Madden NFL 17.
