On The Fly: Top stock stories at midday

Stocks opened in negative territory and have remained there throughout the morning. The averages have moved in a narrow range as month end approaches and investors may be looking to book profits over the next couple of days. Oil prices, which were lower to start the day, have reversed and are now up roughly 2.5% and over $47 a barrel ahead of Wednesday's OPEC meeting. ECONOMIC NEWS: In the U.S., the Dallas Fed manufacturing index surged to 10.2 in November, which was well above consensus expectations of 2.0 for the month. U.S. holiday retail spending is estimated to have dipped over Thanksgiving weekend, said the National Retail Federation. Though promotions encouraged 154M consumers to buy, compared to 151M last year at this time, the average per capita spend fell to $289.19 from $299.60 the year prior, NRF estimated based on its survey. In Asia, China's industrial profits rose 9.8% in October, after a 7.7% increase in September. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Time Inc. (TIME) have gained about 17.5% near noon after The New York Post reported that the former CEO of Warner Music Group, Edgar Bronfman Jr., recently submitted a bid to buy the company for $18 a share, which the company's board is said to have rejected... Cyber Monday has arrived and Amazon (AMZN) is again in the spotlight as the giant e-retailer rolls out thousands of deal from clothing to electronic devices. While shoppers may be benefitting today, investors are not, as the stock slid almost 2% at midday to about $766 per share. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTSH), which advanced over 8% after Elliott Management, which owns more than 4% of the common stock and equivalents of Cognizant, made public a "value-enhancement plan" that it contends can help the company achieve a value of $80-$90 per share or more by the end of 2017. Also higher was Finisar (FNSR), which gained almost 5% after Needham analyst Alex Henderson upgraded the stock to Strong Buy from Buy as he expects a strong "beat and raise" quarter and strong results for 2017 and 2018. Among the noteworthy losers was H&R Block (HRB), which slid about 7% after BTIG analyst Mark Palmer downgraded the stock to Sell on increased fears that a potentially simplified tax code may undermine the company's purpose. Also lower was Tupperware Brands (TUP), which slipped almost 5% after B. Riley analyst Linda Bolton Weiser downgraded the stock to Sell from Neutral, saying it has not moved lower to reflect post-election currency devaluations. Additionally, Panera Bread (PNRA) dropped about 2% after Wedbush analyst Nick Setyan downgraded the stock to Neutral, saying its valuation already reflects expectations for sustained same-store-sales growth. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was down 38.73, or 0.2%, to 19,113.41, the Nasdaq was down 15.00, or 0.28%, to 5,383.92, and the S&P 500 was down 6.35, or 0.29%, to 2,207.00.

Initial eCommerce data points show stable trends, says Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Jason Helfstein says initial eCommerce data points show stable trends ahead of Cyber-Monday, after Adobe (ADBE) and ComScore (SCOR) released online retail sales data for Thanksgiving and Black Friday. The analyst notes that Adobe recorded $5.3B in online spending during the two-day period, over 18% year over year, same as last year, but points out that the company does not measure Amazon (AMZN) sales, as data reflects sales from "Adobe Marketing Cloud" clients. On the other hand, Helfstein says comScore data showed "significant" acceleration, with spending over 18% year over year to $3.3B during the two-day period.

eCommerce keeps taking share from offline retailers, says Piper Jaffray
Adobe released Thanksgiving and Black Friday eCommerce data over the weekend, which indicates overall eCommerce volume up 17.7% and that eCommerce continues to take significant share from offline retailers, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster tells investors in a research note. He believes the "health" of the eCommerce market is an incremental positive in the Amazon.com story. With the best eCommerce experience available, Amazon's dominance should continue into the holiday season, Munster contends. He reiterates an Overweight rating on the shares with a $900 price target.

Citi trims Amazon price target on lower AWS estimates
To reflect the reduced storage prices announced last week by Amazon Web Services, Citi analyst Mark May cut his AWS revenue and consolidated segment operating income for 2017 by 3% and 9%, respectively. The analyst, however, does not view the price reductions as an indication of competitive pressures or a threat to long-term margin outlook for AWS. May lowered his price target for Amazon.com shares to $960 from $965 and keeps a Buy rating on name. His new price target reflects 23% upside from current levels.

Cognizant downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at William Blair
William Blair analyst Anil Doradla downgraded Cognizant Technology Solutions to Market Perform from Outperform. After visiting India, the analyst is concerned that Cognizant will be affected by structural changes within the services industry. The newest headwind to the industry is related to the potential policy changes under President-elect Trump, Doradla tells investors in a research note. Further, the analyst is disappointed by the company's lack of capital returns to shareholders. He also expects Cognizant's growth will continue decelerating from 2016 through 2018. In pre-market trading, the shares are down 53c to $52.65.

Needham remains bullish on Optical Sector
Needham analyst Alex Henderson believes the "Optical Super Cycle" is going full steam ahead and strongly reiterates his bullish view on the Optical Sector. The analyst believes that most of the angst over the last week around the optical sector is a non-issue. Henderson is an aggressive buyer on weakness of Lumentum (LITE), NeoPhotonics (NPTN), Oclaro (OCLR), and Inphi (IPHI). Finisar (FNSR), Fabrinet (FN), II-VI (IIVI), GigPeak (GIG) and MACOM (MTSI) are also strong recommendations, he added. Further, Henderson believes Acacia Communications (ACIA) has "way overcorrected," and thinks it can rebound on a stronger Q4 outlook and upside to 2017 numbers.

Piper Jaffray analyst Troy Jensen recommends buying shares of Finisar ahead of the company's October quarter results on December 8. Jensen views consensus estimates for the company's 2017 as "extremely conservative" and sees meaningful estimate revisions as the 100G upgrade cycle ramps throughout the year.
