Whitney Tilson names Exact Sciences, Wingstop as largest shorts

Whitney Tilson of Kase Capital published his November 29 presentation at the Robin Hood investment conference, pitching his investment ideas for Lumber Liquidators (LL), Wingstop (WING) and more. On Lumber Liquidators, Tilson's presentation states: "The company is still struggling and losing money, but has settled most regulatory investigations and lawsuits so I think it's likely to survive -- and might be a good acquisition candidate -- so I'm no longer short the stock." On InterOil (IOC) and Micron (MU), Tilson says: "I no longer hold either position." On his Sodastream (SODA) long thesis, Tilson said: "I have trimmed the position to manage position size/risk, but continue to hold a ~4% position." On his 2014 long pitch on Delta (DAL), JetBlue (JBLU), United (UAL) and American (AAL), Tilson says: "All four have handily outperformed the market, led by JetBlue. I no longer own any of these, but continue to own the airline I pitched at last year's conference, Spirit (SAVE)." On Spirit Airlines specifically, he states: "The price war, mainly with American Airlines, has eased... The stock now trades... modest for a company with such high growth, margins and ROIC. I have taken some profits, but continue to hold a 4% position." On Wayfair (W), Tilson says: "There was formaldehyde in some products, but not enough to warrant attention by consumers, regulators or investors. I remain skeptical of the company's business model, but don't believe it's a good short given its high growth, good management, healthy cash position, and low EV/revenue ratio." On Exact Sciences (EXAS), Tilson states: "Exact Sciences has a single product, Cologuard, a poop-in-a-bucket test... I believe the recent rally gives investors another opportunity to short EXAS. It is currently my largest short position at 3.5%. I recently added to it at current prices after the largest insider sales -- nearly $25M -- ever." Tilson also highlighted Exact's rising cash burn and share issuances, and called its current valuation "extreme," adding that he expects the stock to eventually trade down from its currently "extreme" valuation to "a slight premium to cash, which is $2.58/share." Tilson also presented three new ideas, including a long thesis on Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A), a short idea on the Direxion Daily 20+ Year Treasury Bull 3x ETF, and a short thesis on Wingstop. Calling the restaurant chain's valuation "absurd," Tilson highlighted that "same store sales growth is decelerating" and declared that "there is little that is proprietary or unique about this business -- these are chicken wing restaurants!" He noted that Wingstop is his second largest short position. Reference Link

Piper's recent checks unfavorable for Lumber Liquidators
Piper Jaffray analyst Peter Keith says his firm's recent checks on Lumber Liquidators have been unfavorable with traffic remaining weak and product returns remaining elevated. The analyst believes Lumber's sales continue to run down year-over-year in April despite lapping "significantly easier comparisons" from last year's 60 Minutes profile. Keith lowered his Q2 comp estimate to down 7.5% from flat ahead of the company's Q1 results on Tuesday. He keeps a Neutral rating on the shares with an $11 price target.

Lumber Liquidators sales recovery pushed out to 2017, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Peter Keith said the "most disappointing" element of Lumber Liquidators' quarterly report is perhaps the fact that its sales recovery is now pushed out to 2017 since the company is now lapping its high promotional activity from last year. While noting that visibility is still limited, Keith thinks new management continues to execute and believes sales could begin to rebound more significantly by mid-2017. The analyst raised his price target on the stock to $17 from $11 but keeps a Neutral rating on Lumber Liquidators shares.

Airlines initiated at Bernstein
Bernstein analyst David Vernon initiated coverage of the U.S. airline sector, saying that he is "bullish on the sector" and asserting that it has "favorable..dynamics." He expects the sector's stocks to have "higher average highs and higher average lows over time," driven partly by its investments in return enhancing programs, revenue enhancing initiatives, and "a stronger outlook for longer term capital return" which isn't reflected in valuation, according to the analyst. Vernon recommends owning airlines that have "less financial and operating leverage." He says that he is "favorably disposed" to Southwest (LUV) and Delta Air Lines (DAL), which he says have high returns and low leverage, and is less upbeat on United Continental (UAL), which he says has higher operating leverage and execution risk. He is bearish on American Airlines (AAL), as he thinks that its capacity growth and financial leverage create significant risk. The analyst started coverage of Southwest with an Outperform rating and a $51 price target. He initiated coverage of Delta and United Continental with Market Perform ratings and $43 and $55 price targets, respectively. He launched American with a $31 price target and Underperform rating.
