Gartner: PC shipments down 3.7% y/y in Q4

Worldwide PC shipments totaled 72.6M units in the fourth quarter of 2016, a 3.7% decline from the fourth quarter of 2015, according to preliminary results by Gartner (IT). For the year, 2016 PC shipments totaled 269.7M units, a 6.2% decline from 2015. PC shipments have declined annually since 2012. "Stagnation in the PC market continued into the fourth quarter of 2016 as holiday sales were generally weak due to the fundamental change in PC buying behavior," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. "The broad PC market has been static as technology improvements have not been sufficient to drive real market growth. There have been innovative form factors like 2-in-1s and thin and light notebooks, as well as technology improvements, such as longer battery life. This end of the market has grown fast, led by engaged PC users who put high priority on PCs. However, the market driven by PC enthusiasts is not big enough to drive overall market growth." Lenovo (LNVGY) was the leader in market share in Q4 with 21.7%, while HP Inc. (HPQ) was in second place with 20.4%. Dell had 14.8% market share, while Apple (AAPL) was tied for fourth place with Asus at 7.5%. Other publicly traded companies in PCs and PC components include Intel (INTC), AMD (AMD), Micron (MU), Seagate (STX), Western Digital (WDC), and NVIDIA (NVDA).

Citi lowers 2016 PC estimates to down 6% from down 2%
Citi analyst Jim Suva says recent data points indicate above normal PC inventories and "materially below seasonal demand" in early 2016. Apple called a top U.S. IT Hardware pick for 2017 at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty named Apple as a top pick in U.S. IT Hardware in 2017, saying that the market is "focusing too much on near-term supply chain noise" and not enough on the upcoming iPhone supercycle along with the potential positives of cash repatriation and U.S. tax reform. Of these, Huberty believes the iPhone supercycle is most debated by investors who see China as a risk, but her view is that consumer loyalty to Apple remains high in China. Huberty has an Overweight rating and $148 price target on Apple shares.

Apple remains underappreciated, says Drexel Hamilton
Drexel Hamilton analyst Brian White said all the companies in his Apple Monitor have reported December sales that came in better than historical seasonality. Final December sales for the Apple Monitor fell by 2%, but were better than the average decrease of 11% over the past eleven years, and compare favorably to the five year average of down 6%. White believes Apple is one of the most underappreciated stocks in the world. Near-term, the analyst expects Tim Cook to make Apple grow again in Q1 on the back of the iPhone 7 and a happy holiday season, while he looks forward to the launch of the iPhone 8 in September 2017 and more color on future innovations. Additionally, White said potentially favorable tax repatriation policies could act as a positive catalyst for Apple shares. The analyst rates Apple a Buy with a $185 price target on shares.

Credit Suisse sees continued Semi upside, lays out top 2017 picks
Credit Suisse analyst John Pitzer says that despite outperforming in three of the last four years, shares of Semiconductor companies have more upside. Increasing barriers to entry coupled with slowing supply growth, further industry consolidation and diversifying demand drivers should allow Semis to outgrow global nominal gross domestic product for the first time since the late 1990s, Pitzer tells investors in a research note titled "2017 Outlook: Go Secular or Go Home." He views the Semi space as the "safest/cheapest vehicle with which to exploit Data Growth." Pitzer this morning upgraded Texas Instruments (TXN) to Outperform from Neutral and Brooks Automation (BRKS) to Neutral from Underperform. He also downgraded Rudolph Technologies (RTEC) to Neural.
