Box Office Battle: 'Jack Reacher' expected to knock off 'The Accountant'

This weekend's major release is Viacom (VIA, VIAB) subsidiary Paramount Pictures action thriller sequel "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back," with Tom Cruise returning as the titular star. The film is expected to outperform the original "Jack Reacher," which opened to $15.2M, with a domestic gross in the range of $18M-$19M. Its main competition is Time Warner's (TWX) Warner Bros. thriller "The Accountant," starring Ben Affleck, which is expected to bring in $13.5M-$14M in its second weekend at theaters. Two other movies releasing this weekend, timed with the Halloween holiday, are Tyler Perry's "Boo! A Madea Halloween" and horror sequel "Ouija: Origin of Evil." "Boo!," which is being distributed by Lionsgate (LGF), is expected to open in the $16M-$17M range, while the "Ouija" return, which is being distributed by Comcast's (CMCSA, CMCSK) Universal Pictures, is expected to open in the $13.5M-$16M range. Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures' "The Girl on the Train," based on the best selling mystery thriller novel, is expected to earn an additional $6M-$7M in its third weekend in theaters. Other publicly traded companies in film making include 21st Century Fox (FOX, FOXA), Disney (DIS), and Sony (SNE).
