S&P little changed as market looks for direction

The S&P and Dow remain little changed as the market struggles for direction. The averages have remained near the flat line for a large part of the session, though the Nasdaq has been weaker in afternoon trading than the other major averages. Despite the narrow trading range, the number of declining stocks is ahead of advancing stocks by about 2:1 while down volume is only slightly ahead of up volume.
