Stocks remain lower but off worst levels

Stocks remain in negative territory as they have been all day. The averages have pared their losses but have moved in a narrow range since the opening hour of trading. Declining stocks are ahead of advancing stocks by about 3:2 while oil prices are higher by roughly 1% with WTI just above $53 per barrel. The volume is light and the news flow is slow as investors return from the holiday weekend and wait for the pick-up of earnings reporting volume and the presidential inauguration, both of which will be arriving soon.
