On The Fly: ETF fund flow highlights

ETF fund flows were very light for the past week, in keeping with typical summer trading patterns per data from ETF.com. Creations beat redemptions in the top ten funds on either side. Leading Inflows were the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ), the Schwab U.S. Broad Market ETF, and the iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF (ITOT). Interestingly the ProShares Short VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (SVXY) made the top ten as did SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) suggesting a more defensive posture given price declines on Thursday. Remaining inflows were light and without theme. On the redemptions side, which in the top ten funds was only about 63% of creations, the largest outflows were from the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO), the iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond (HYG), Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF), and the Consumer Discretionary Select SPDR (XLY). This seems like part of the "risk off" trade seen through the week. The remaining outflows were much smaller in scale and without theme.
