Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.
OPENING THIS WEEKEND: Among this weekend's new releases is Warner Bros. (T) horror film "Doctor Sleep," an adaptation of the 2013 Stephen King novel of the same name, which is a sequel to King's 1977 book "The Shining." The film, which stars Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson, has already brought in an estimated $1.5M from Thursday evening previews. The movie is anticipated to win the weekend at the box office with a domestic gross of about $25M.
Also out this weekend is Universal Pictures' (CMCSA, CMCSK) romantic comedy "Last Christmas," starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, and Lionsgate's (LGF.A, LGF.B) World War II film "Midway," directed by Roland Emmerich. "Last Christmas" is expected to come in second place at the box office with a gross of about $15M, while "Midway" is expected to come in fourth place with a domestic gross of roughly $13M.
STILL PLAYING: Rounding out this weekend's top five is "Terminator: Dark Fate," which won last weekend's box office battle, beating out Warner Bros.' "Joker," which came in second. The new "Terminator," which is distributed by Paramount (VIA, VIAB) in North America, Tencent (TCEHY) in China, and 20th Century Fox (FOX, FOXA) internationally, is anticipated to end the weekend in third place, with "Joker" expected to round out the weekend at fifth place.
