"Box Office Battle" is The Fly's weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend's box office.
Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal's WWI movie "1917" won this weekend's domestic box office with $36.5M, in one of the best nationwide debuts ever for the month of January. Overseas, the film earned $19.9M from its first 30 markets for an early foreign cume of $21.1M and $60.4M globally. "1917" sports an A- CinemaScore and a 90% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Disney's (DIS) "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" fell to number 2 in its fourth weekend with $15M. Behind it was Sony's (SNE) "Jumanji: The Next Level," grossing another $14M in its fifth outing for a domestic total of $257.1M. ViacomCBS (VIAC) subsidiary Paramount's "Like a Boss" placed number 4 with a $10M debut. The movie tied with AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros.' "Just Mercy," which also earned and estimated $10M over the weekend.
