Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson expects Apple on August 1 to report a "solid" quarter, but adds the outlook may be slightly below consensus due to the timing of the next iPhone launch. The setup for shares over the coming months appears favorable, Olson tells investors in a pre-earnings research note. The analyst pushed 4M iPhone units from the September to December quarter amid industry chatter suggesting that at least some models will not be available until October, November and December. Olson maintains an Overweight rating on Apple with a $158 price target. The stock in late morning trading is down 62c to $149.72.

Apple saw sales of its iPhones fall 19.1% in the first three months of the year, CNBC's Ryan Browne reports, citing data from Counterpoint Research. Meanwhile, Huawei saw a 69.7% surge in smartphone sales in the country during the same period, Counterpoint said. Reference Link

Apple quietly acquired Paris-based AI startup Datakalab on December 17, Challenges' David Pargamin reports. The terms of the transaction could not be learned, but European Commission has been notified of the deal, the author notes. Reference Link
