Piper Jaffray analyst Katherine Egbert says that while a deal is unlikely, a Microsoft (MSFT) acquisition of AMD (AMD) would make some strategic sense. Talk of a potential deal has come up periodically over the last few years, Egbert tells investors in a research note. The latest being Friday when website Fudzilla reported that Microsoft is in talks to acquire the chipmaker. Buying AMD would be consistent with other large tech vendors recently expending their chip design talent, the analyst writes. A deal would also provide Microsoft "protection and a clear path for Xbox development," she adds. However, a merger is unlikely given the implications for Wintel, Egbert cautions. She points out an all-cash purchase at a 20% premium for AMD would be 1c dilutive in 2016 for Microsoft. AMD would likely not command much of a premium given its declining market share, she believes. Egbert has an Overweight rating on Microsoft. Piper does not formally cover shares of AMD. After rising Friday, shares of the chipmaker dropped 19c yesterday to $1.82.
