SunTrust analyst David Magee said he doubts that increased downloads are the reason for the soft game sales data reported by NPD, noting that many games are bought for gifting at this time of year and that it is very possible that holiday sales will skew later in the season, as they did last year. Magee also noted that current generation consoles software sales actually rose 37%, but that was more than offset by a 60% decline in games for older consoles. The analyst, who thinks it is "too early to panic" about GameStop, keeps a Buy rating on the stock, which is down 5% to $30.44 near noon.
