B. Riley FBR analyst Dave Kang remains a buyer of Infinera (INFN) and Ciena (CIEN) while remaining cautious of Inphi (IPHI), II-VI (IIVI) and Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) into the Q3 earnings season. Based on his latest checks, the analyst believes the recent 15% U.S. tariffs on optical components manufactured in China "could further exacerbate the already challenged datacom industry." While optical component suppliers will try to pass some of the tariffs to their customers, customers are pushing back on the idea as they are threatening to use non-Chinese products, Kang tells investors in a research note. He believes II-VI will negatively be impacted from tariffs as Finisar has a strong manufacturing presence in China, and that Inphi and Applied Optoelectronics could also be impacted.
