At the American College of Cardiology medical meeting on March 16, Apple (AAPL) will present data from the Apple Heart Study, JPMorgan analyst Robbie Marcus tells investors in a research note. While a positive trial demonstrating that the Apple Watch has predictive value for diagnosing atrial fibrillation "might at first blush" appear to be a negative for iRhythm (IRTC), it would actually be a positive, "and potentially a big positive," Marcus contends. He believes iRhythm investors should hope for a best case result in the Apple Heart Study, or the device detecting a high percentage of atrial fibrillation cases, and with a low false-positive rate. A widely used consumer device with high quality AF screening could be the best way to bring the millions of asymptomatic AF patients into the system, says Marcus. Further, the Apple Watch PPG technology "can't characterize AF anywhere close" to iRhythm's Zio as it just looks at heartbeats, and not waveforms, so it won't replace Zio, he adds. The analyst reiterates iRhythm as his top SMID Cap pick with an Overweight rating and $110 price target.
