After Lithia Motors (LAD) announced its entry into a strategic partnership with online used vehicle retailer Shift, Craig-Hallum analyst Steve Dyer said he believes Lithia and other brick-and-mortar dealerships have underestimated the willingness of consumers to buy vehicles online but that this deal should help accelerate its e-commerce business. He sees significant synergies and thinks a hybrid of brick-and-mortar and e-commerce could be an ideal solution for changing consumer demands. While Dyer believes Carvana (CVNA) and others like Vroom and Shift have proven that consumers are willing to buy vehicles online, he also thinks investors are not sufficiently discounting Carvana's high execution risk, cash burn and the competitive response from traditional dealers. Dyer keeps a Buy rating on Lithia Motors and a Hold rating on Carvana.
