Atlantic Equities analyst Stephen White believes 2018 marked a return to sustainable long term volume growth for the U.S. railroad industry. However, he views the sector valuation as "near the mid-point of a fair range" and therefore emphasizes selectivity. In that context, he initiated Norfolk Southern with a Neutral rating and $169 price target, as he believes strong intermodal positioning is offset by limited expectation of margin expansion. Norfolk also lags CSX operationally in the Eastern region, White said.
