JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall reiterates an Overweight rating on Qualcomm (QCOM) following press reports that Apple (AAPL) has selected Intel (INTC) for part of its baseband chip needs for the iPhone 7 and/or the expected four inch iPhone. The analyst does not believe Intel is in the four inch device, which he expects Apple to launch at its upcoming March 21 event. Hall does believe, however, that Intel has an option on production capacity at TSMC (TSM) for possible delivery of modem chips for the iPhone 7. He estimates that even in a worst case scenario where Qualcomm loses 40% of the new iPhone to Intel, the impact would be a "relatively small" 4% hit to the company's earnings. Hall thinks increased chip competition in mobile should keep Qualcomm diversifying into other areas like automotive and the data center.
