Longbow analyst Alton Stump said his checks with U.S. Burger King franchisees lead him to estimate North American same-store sales were down 0.5%-1% in Q4, which he notes is better than his prior estimate for a 1.5% decline but below the consensus call for a 0.2% drop. The introduction of the 10 chicken nuggets for $1 deal in mid-October provided a sales lift but irritated franchisees who were not pleased with the margin pressure, added Stump. Based on his franchisee checks for Burger King and McDonald's (MCD), he thinks the latter gained share over the former, and possibly over Wendy's (WEN), in Q4. Stump keeps a Neutral rating on Burger King parent Restaurant Brands (QSR).
