As previously reported, Canaccord upgraded Shaw Communications (SJR) to Buy from Hold and downgraded Telus (TU) to Hold from Buy as analyst Aravinda Galappatthige updated his views on the Canadian wireless market. Since the initial introduction of unlimited in the market, he has seen a "consistent stream of promotions and counter promotions" and he thinks this is potentially leading to different economics than perhaps originally envisaged by the incumbents, in particular Rogers Communications (RCI) and Telus, Galappatthige tells investors. Periods of increased activity and adjustment can open the door for the challenger brands to step up, which was a factor in his upgrade of Shaw, along with the company's reduced exposure to wireless in the second half compared to its telecommunications peers, the analyst noted. Galappatthige raised his price target on Shaw shares to C$30 from C$28 and trimmed his target on Telus shares to C$50 from C$52.
