Deutsche Bank analyst Rod Lachte tells investors today that energy storage represents a "significant" opportunity for Tesla (TSLA). The electric carmaker on April 30 will announce the launch of new battery storage systems for the home and commercial markets, powered by the same batteries in the Model S, Tesla told analysts and investors yesterday via email. Its CEO Elon Musk and the CEO of SolarCity, where Musk is chairman, have previously commented that they believe every SolarCity unit will ultimately be bundled with battery storage, the analyst states. He estimates equipping just 50% of SolarCity customers with 10kWh battery storage systems by 2018 could translate into up to $1.5B of revenue for Tesla. A price of $300/kWh could eventually translate to $4.5B in annual revenue, Lachte notes. He keeps a Buy rating on Tesla with a $245 price target. The Model S maker closed yesterday up $4.14 to $209.41.

Elon Musk says: "Regarding FSD Version 12, which is the pure AI-based self-driving, if you haven't experienced this, I strongly urge you to try it out, it's profound. And the rate of improvement is rapid. And we've now turned that on for all cars with the cameras and inference computer everything from Hardware 3 on in North America. So it's been pushed out to, I think, around 1.8 million vehicles, and we're seeing about half of people use it so far and that percentage is increasing with each passing week."
