Pacific Crest analyst Brad Erickson says his latest channel checks with U.S. sales centers indicate that Tesla Model X orders are still lagging expectations. The analyst does not expect Tesla's March-ending Model S promotional offer of 20% off the old lease cost to drive a noteworthy increase to sales. Erickson lowered his estimates for the electric carmaker through 2020, citing "incremental skepticism" of both unit volume production and profitability, along with "persistently mixed feedback on demand." He expects for the stock to act better into the March 29 Model 3 unveiling, however. Nonetheless, Erickson recommends investors continue to avoid shares of Tesla. He keeps a Sector Weight rating on the name.

Tesla is focused on building a giant Texas datacenter for its robotaxi project, which is now a top priority, after postponing work on a cheaper vehicle, Electrek's Fred Lambert reports. The cheaper vehicle, codenamed NV9, sometimes referred to as Model 2, was expected to cost around $25,000, but Lambert writes that the program is "effectively scratched" right now as Tesla is putting all resources into its self-driving effort.
