Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson sees a less crowded holiday video game title slate this year versus 2018. There are actually more titles launching in holiday 2019, but fewer large titles, suggesting gamer wallet share will be more concentrated, Olson tells investors in a research note. Most notably, Take-Two Interactive's (TTWO) Borderlands 3 and Electronic Arts' (EA) Star Wars Jedi, incremental titles that can expand an established player base, could be beneficiaries, says the analyst. Further, Activision Blizzard's (ATVI) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare could draw in lapsed players, particularly with the inclusion of cross-play, adds Olson. The analyst's survey of over 500 gamers showed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Star Wars are "top of mind." Take-Two and EA have the most near-term upside potential but with a "strong" 2020 slate, Activision "may be the best longer-term bet," Olson writes. He has Overweight ratings on all three names.
