Morgan Stanley analysts Ricky Goldwasser and Zack Sopcak weighed in on The Wall Street Journal's report that Walgreens (WBA) and Humana (HUM) are in talks to expand their existing relationship in a note to investors issued Wednesday, stating that they have no knowledge of a deal and noting that neither company has commented. From the Walgreens perspective, Goldwasser said that a managed care "anchor" is "the missing link" in Walgreens' strategy and Humana would be a logical partner, but he also questions whether an arm's length relationship can deliver the same benefit as vertically integration over the long-term. From Humana's side, Sopcak noted that Humana has spoken positively about the access a retail partnership would bring, though they haven't expressed a need to be tied to a single retailer. Goldwasser has an Equal Weight rating on Walgreens and Sopcak has an Overweight rating on Humana.
