On The Fly: Top five weekend stock stories

Catch up on the weekend's top five stories with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. General Motors (GM) appears set to follow Ford (F), Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) and others in announcing U.S.-centric manufacturing plans in the wake of Donald Trump's election, according to sources quoted by the Wall Street Journal. The automaker will commit to "at least" $1B in new domestic investments, the publication said, adding that an announcement could come as soon as Tuesday. For his part, Trump tweeted Sunday that "car companies and others, if they want to do business in our country, have to start making things here again." 2. Noble Energy (NBL) will acquire Clayton Williams Energy (CWEI) in a $2.7B cash and stock deal, substantially boosting its presence in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico. The company, which also updated its four-year targets, noted that "the midstream assets and planned buildout provide significant synergies and substantial dropdown potential in association with our ownership in Noble Midstream Partners (NBLX)." 3. Software company Progress (PRGS) issued its fourth quarter report Monday, which included a lower-than-expected Q1 forecast and news of a refreshed strategic plan alongside the departure of Chief Operating Officer Jerry Rulli. 4. Fox's (FOX) surprise winner "Hidden Figures" and Lionsgate's (LGF) Oscar hopeful "La La Land" topped the U.S. box office over the Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, while several newcomers, including Time Warner's (TWX) Ben Affleck-led "Live by Night" failed to place in the top five despite sizable budgets. 5. Revlon (REV) and Goldman Sachs (GS) saw positive calls in Barron's, while Exxon Mobil (XOM) was discussed negatively.

JPMorgan more concerned about Tesla after spending day with GM
JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman is even more concerned that Tesla (TSLA) will have a difficult time realizing its profit objectives in the increasingly competitive market for electric vehicles after spending a day with General Motors (GM). GM is first to market amongst all automakers globally with a "modestly" priced battery electric vehicle with substantial range, or in excess of 238 miles, Brinkman tells investors in a research note after meeting with GM CFO Chuck Stevens and test driving the new Chevrolet Bolt EV. Further, the analyst points out that GM plans to extend the Bolt beyond sales to consumers and into ride-sharing applications, including of the autonomous variety. Bolt represents "solid competition" for the upcoming Tesla Model 3 at a time when the electric vehicle pricing model is "challenged" with a number of automakers chasing a still limited number of vehicle customers, Brinkman contends. He thinks Tesla will find it increasingly more difficult to profitably compete. The analyst reiterates an Overweight rating on GM and an Underweight rating on Tesla. Shares of Tesla are trading down $1.31 to $190.98 in pre-market trading.

Piper lays out top Auto and Truck picks into 2017
Piper Jaffray analyst Alexander Potter ranked his auto- and truck-related stocks in order of conviction heading into 2017. His top three names are General Motors (GM), Delphi (DLPH) and Mobileye (MBLY). Mobileye offers the most "compelling upside potential" at almost 70%, but also the most risk, Potter tells investors in a research note on the Autos, Trucks, and Advanced Mobility space. As such, the stock sits third behind GM and Delphi in order of preference. After a strong showing in 2016, the analyst thinks most of the truck stocks will struggle to outperform in 2017. He calls Allison Transmission (ALSN) a notable Underweight.

The survey indicated long wait lists for the MY17 Ford F-150 Raptor and ask prices up to $20,000 above the suggested retail price for in-stock units. Disney deal for Netflix 'hard to justify' at current levels, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Omar Sheikh weighed in on the debate as to whether Disney (DIS) should bid to acquire Netflix (NFLX), concluding that the dilution to earnings, free cash flow and to returns at the current share price would be prohibitive. Additionally, the strategic pressure to acquire a distributor is moderating with industry trends improving, Sheikh tells investors. However, this debate is unlikely to go away, given the pending merger of AT&T (T) and Time Warner (TWX), the continued growth of subscription video on demand aggregators and Disney's upcoming sports rights renewals, adds Sheikh, who keeps an Outperform rating and $125 price target on Disney shares.

Goldman Sachs downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Citi
Citi analyst Keith Horowitz downgraded Goldman Sachs (GS) to Sell with a $225 price target, representing 6% downside from current levels. While higher interest rates benefit fixed income trading, the path is "relatively uncertain and the bar is relatively high" for Goldman, Horowitz tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes U.S. bank stocks do not offer compelling risk/reward profiles following the recent rally. Horowitz this morning also downgraded Comerica (CMA) to Sell while keeping Buy ratings on Wells Fargo (WFC) and Bank of America (BAC).

DOWNGRADE

On The Fly: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Exxon Mobil (XOM) downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Wells Fargo with analyst Roger Read citing valuation and the absence of an acquisition during the downturn as a way to deliver growth and returns. The window for a deal has likely closed while Exxon trades at a "premium" valuation, Read tells investors in a research note. The analyst lowered his price target range for the shares to $87-$93 from $92-$100. Read's top pick in the International Exploration & Production space is Suncor (SU). 2. AT&T (T) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank with analyst Matthew Niknam trimming his estimates to reflect weaker margins and slower earnings growth. The analyst notes this is his third downward estimate revision since October. A number of fundamental headwinds, including intensifying competition in wireless/linear video, is likely to pick up in 2017, Niknam tells investors in a research note. He views AT&T's risk/reward as more balanced at current levels and lowered his price target for the shares to $43 from $44. 3. Novartis (NVS) downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at Credit Suisse. 4. Scotts Miracle-Gro downgraded to Hold from Buy at SunTrust with analyst William Chappell citing valuation. 5. Pacific Continental downgraded to Neutral from Buy at DA Davidson and to Market Perform at Keefe Bruyette. This list is just a portion of The Fly's full analyst coverage.
