On The Fly: Top stock stories for Thursday

Stocks spent the early part of the session trending near unchanged despite solid earnings reports from some of the nation's largest banks and another great consumer confidence reading. As trading slowed heading into the long weekend, the sellers gained control, helped by a report the U.S. dropped a massive bomb on an ISIS stronghold. Investors on edge given geopolitical risk in the Middle East and North Korea, along with jitters as the earnings season gets set to ramp up, decided to pare their risk ahead of the Easter holiday. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., initial jobless claims slid 1,000 to 234,000 in the week ended April 8, after plunging 24,000 last week to 235,000. The Producer Price Index fell 0.1% in March, with the core rate unchanged. Consumer sentiment jumped to 98.0 in the preliminary April print from the University of Michigan survey, rising 1.1 points from the March reading of 96.9. Natural gas inventories showed a 10B cubic feet build, in line with consensus. Also in energy news, Baker Hughes reported its weekly U.S. rig count figures, revealing an 8 rig increase from last week to 847 rigs. COMPANY NEWS: Three major U.S. banks reported quarterly results before the market open, kicking off this earnings season. JPMorgan (JPM) slid 1.17% despite reporting better than expected earnings and revenue for the first quarter. Wells Fargo (WFC) also fell 3.33% after reporting that its revenue missed estimates as the lender's troubled community bank weighed on Q1 results. In addition, Citigroup (C) finished fractionally lower after beating both top and bottom line expectations for the quarter, helped by a jump in bond trading... In other news, Tesla (TSLA) gained 2.4% after CEO Elon Musk tweeted in the afternoon that the company is set to unveil its semi truck in September. Musk later tweeted that a pickup truck will be unveiled in 18-24 months and that the final Model 3 will be unveiled in July. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the noteworthy gainers was Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI), which advanced almost 11% after the company reported better than expected earnings and revenue guidance for the first quarter. Also higher was SkyWest (SKYW), which rose 8.7% after Raymond James analyst Savanthi Syth upgraded the stock to Strong Buy, saying that the substantial decline in the shares creates an attractive entry point. Among the notable losers was DexCom (DXCM), which fell almost 1% after a news report said Apple (AAPL) is secretly working on non-invasive glucose monitors, an area on which the medical device maker is also focused. Also lower was Pier 1 Imports (PIR), which dropped 9.1% after the company reported weaker than expected fourth quarter revenue and disappointing guidance for the first quarter. Additionally, Infosys (INFY) fell 5.1% following in line fourth quarter earnings and lower than expected revenue. INDEXES: The Dow fell 138.61, or 0.67%, to 20,453.25, the Nasdaq lost 31.01, or 0.53%, to 5,805.15, and the S&P 500 declined 15.98, or 0.68%, to 2,328.95.

'Many think Wells Fargo EPS came in below expectations, says Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst Bill Carcache says that "many investors" believe that Wells Fargo's Q1 EPS came in below expectations, given the 3c per share in reserve releases and the 7c per share profit it realized on "market-sensitive revenues" it reported. The analyst says that the "Results were characterized by softer- than-expected top-line growth, higher expenses, and lower provision." He notes that Wells Fargo, like JPMorgan (JPM) and Citi (C), reported slower loan growth. However, he keeps a Buy rating on Wells Fargo.

Mrogan Stanley recommends buying large banks on weakness after Q1 results
Morgan Stanley analyst Betsy Graseck expects most large banks she covers to report weaker than expected Q1 results. However, the analyst recommends that investors buy the large-cap bank stocks on weakness, as she expects them to benefit from "stronger capital return, easing regulation, lower taxes and higher rates in 2H17," along with an improved GDP outlook and strong expense management. Graseck identifies Citi (C) as her top pick heading into the quarter, as she expects its Q1 results to beat expectations, driven by strength in emerging markets and "repositioning investments" that have started to beat fruit. She expects the bank to get a boost from CCAR in June and says that it is "the biggest beneficiary of easing regulation." Other publicly traded companies in the space include Bank of America (BAC), Goldman Sachs (GS), JPMorgan (JPM), Morgan Stanley (MS), U.S. Bancorp (USB) and Wells Fargo (WFC).

Piper sees Wells Fargo underperforming peers today on 'lower quality' earnings
Piper Jaffray analyst Kevin Barker estimates operating earnings of 98c per share at Wells Fargo (WFC) in Q1 after adjusting for tax and hedging, also noting that its net interest margin was flat despite the increase in rates and that its efficiency ratio jumped "well above" the bank's long-term target. Citing what he views as "lower quality" earnings, Barker expects Wells Fargo shares to underperform peers today. JPMorgan (JPM), Citi (C) and PNC Financial (PNC) all also reported results this morning. Barker keeps a Neutral rating on Wells Fargo shares.

Glass-Steagall return wouldn't find support in Congress, says Evercore ISI
After media reports claimed White House economic adviser Gary Cohn supports rules to make banks split their consumer lending units from their investment divisions, which hints at a return of the "Glass-Steagall" law that was ended by President Clinton and a Republican Congress in 1999, Evercore ISI analyst Terry Haines said there is little support in Congress for a return of the law. Any new bank regulations can't "be done with the stroke of a pen" and will have to go through the usual regulatory process, added Haines. Publicly traded large banks include Bank of America (BAC), Citi (C), Goldman Sachs (GS), JPMorgan (JPM), Morgan Stanley (MS), U.S. Bancorp (USB) and Wells Fargo (WFC).

Applied Optoelectronics results 'most positive' for Finisar, says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst James Kisner noted that Applied Optoelectronics' (AAOI) pre-announcement of better than expected Q1 results was attributed by the company to strength in demand for datacenter products, which he reads as "most positive" for Finisar (FNSR) and also positive, but to lesser degree, for Oclaro (OCLR) and Lumentum (LITE). Mellanox (MLNX) also benefits from ramping hyperscale demand and Applied's report is good news for it too, Kisner added.

Cowen sees Apple threat to Dexcom as 'only hype/hope' at this point
The slide in Dexcom (DXCM) shares this morning is "seemingly due" to a report saying Apple (AAPL) is working on a non-invasive glucose sensor, said Cowen analyst Doug Schenkel, but he cautions that other companies have been trying to do the same for decades and all have failed. While you can " never say never," Schenkel views it as "extremely unlikely" that Apple has succeeded and he will not be worried about this threat to Dexcom until he sees data, he tells investors. Beyond today's dip, a move in Dexcom shares from their recent highs is due to heightened investor focus on nearer-term competitive products coming later this year from Medtronic (MDT) and Abbott (ABT), noted Schenkel, who keeps an Outperform rating and $90 price target on Dexcom.
