Galaxy S8 'teardown' finds Qualcomm, Skyworks, NXP chips

iFixit has published its "teardowns" of the Samsung (SSNLF) Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. Among the S8 Plus' components, the group identified parts from Qualcomm (QCOM), Toshiba (TOSBF), Sony (SNE), Skyworks (SWKS), Broadcom (AVGO) and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), as well as a Maxim (MXIM) chip in the S8. Turning to the battery of the S8 Plus, iFixit commented, "Let's hope that Samsung's improved testing procedures are what the Note7 was missing, because this design looks about the same to us... The S8+ features a 13.48 Wh battery -- the exact same capacity as the Note7." Reference Link

Skyworks price target raised to $110 from $100 at Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Anthony Stoss raised his price target for Skyworks (SWKS) to $110 from $100 on earlier Apple (AAPL) builds and content expansion in Samsung's (SSNLF) Galaxy S8 And iPhone 8. The analyst notes that the Internet of Things business continues its fast growth, and says he would be a buyer of Skyworks heading into the iPhone 8 launch as the company will benefit from record breaking sales. He reiterates a Buy rating on Skyworks' shares.

Digital Turbine upgraded to Buy at Roth Capital
As previously reported, Roth Capital analyst Brian Alger upgraded Digital Turbine (APPS) to Buy from Neutral saying numerous signs indicate that the fundamental risk to its story has been "dramatically reduced." The analyst notes that meetings at Mobile World Congress as well as his annual conference lead him to believe the strategic positioning remains as strong, if not stronger, than ever. With the March quarter effectively complete, and the launch of Samsung's (SSNLF) Galaxy S8 now confirmed for April 21st, Alger sees "substantially more" upside potential than risk. He also raised his price target on Digital Turbine's shares to $1.30 from $1.10.

STMicroelectronics to benefit from content jump in iPhone 8, says Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Anthony Stoss raised his STMicroelectronics' (STM) March and June quarter estimates to account for content increases in Samsung's (SSNLF) Galaxy S8 and Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 8, coupled with continued strong demand for the Nintendo (NTDOY) Switch and strength in the company's connected car business. The analyst says STMicroelectronics remains one of his top names in 2017 and would be a buyer heading into both the S8 and iPhone 8 launches. He reiterates a Buy rating and $18 price target on STMicroelectronics' shares.

Samsung S8 launch positive for STMicroelectronics, others, says Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Tony Stoss notes that Samsung (SSNLF) Galaxy S8's features were as he had expected, which is positive for STMicroelectronics (STM), Cypress Semiconductor (CY) and Integrated Device Synaptics (IDTI), and largely a non-impact for Synaptics (SYNA). The analyst says Samsung using USB-C for the port should be a benefit for Cypress as it is the likely supplier of USB-C controllers for the phone. Additionally, Samsung has enabled the S8 for wireless fast charging and showcased a fast charge wireless pad, which is likely an ASP increase from previous wireless charging solutions Integrated Device Synaptics was providing. The phone also features a fingerprint sensor on the back that is likely Synaptics, he notes, adding that this should be roughly in-line with previous ASP's of fingerprint sensors that the latter has provided to Samsung.

Qualcomm price target lowered to $60 from $70 at Citi
Citi analyst Christopher Danely lowered his price target for Qualcomm (QCOM) to $60 citing the likelihood of lower royalty rates driven by the Korea Fair Trade Commission and Apple (AAPL) lawsuits. The analyst, however, believes lower royalties are priced into Qualcomm shares. He expects the stock to trade up to $60 due to positive catalysts from the NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) acquisition and iPhone launch in the second half of 2017. Danely keeps a Neutral rating on Qualcomm.

Western Digital likely to acquire Toshiba, says RBC Capital
After multiple media reports stated that the Japanese government probably won;t rescue Toshiba (TOSBF, TOSYY), RBC Capital analyst Amit Daryanani says that the news "greatly increases" the odds of the company being acquired by U.S. entities. He thinks that Western Digital (WDX), in partnership with private equity firms, is the "high probability acquirer" of the company. By undertaking the deal, Western Digital would "further improve its NAND position and drive significant accretion with an upside bias to our $12.00+ EPS scenario," Daryanani wrote. He kept a $90 price target and an Outperform rating on the shares.

Vuzix smart glasses pact with Toshiba a pivotal event, says Maxim
Maxim analyst Brian Kinstlinger noted that Toshiba's (TOSBF) pact with Vuzix (VUZI) for a custom pair of smart glasses based on the recent M300s comes just a year after Toshiba canceled the release of their Wearvue smart glasses and views the deal as validation that Vuzix is a "clear leader" in smart glasses technology. The analyst, who sees the development agreement as a pivotal event for Vuzix, suggests investors buy Vuzix shares ahead of the ramp in revenues he expects in 2017 and reiterates a Buy rating and $11 price target on the stock.

Broadcom deal for Toshiba NAND has wide range of accretion potential, says UBS
UBS analyst Stephen Chin commented on the Nikkei report that Broadcom (AVGO) and Silver Lake Partners had submitted a bid to acquire Toshiba's (TOSBF) NAND business for $17.9B, saying he would not be surprised if Broadcom were in fact a bidder but he is not sure if a deal will happen. Depending on the structure of a deal, his pro forma scenarios range from 3% EPS accretion in FY18 to 9% in FY19 accretion, he tells investors. Chin keeps a Buy rating and $245 price target on Broadcom shares, which slid by 0.6% to close at $220.04 yesterday.

August NPD video game software sales rose 1%, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says August NPD video game software sales were up 1% year-over-year, driven by Sony (SNE) publishing No Man's Sky and Electronic Arts' (EA) Madden NFL 17. The data are most positive for Activision Blizzard (ATVI), which continued to benefit from sell-through of incremental title Overwatch, Olson tells investors in a research note. He believes the monthly numbers are largely irrelevant for Take-Two (TTWO), since NBA 2K17 is due out in September, and GameStop (GME), since the company announced October quarter guidance at the end of August.

March NPD video game software sales rose 5%, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson notes March NPD video game software sales were up 5% year-over-year, helped by the launch of Nintendo's (NTDOY) Switch console. Top titles for the month included Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Breadth of the Wild and Sony's (SNE) Horizon Zero Dawn, Olson tells investors in a research note. While Activision's (ATVI) and Take-Two's (TTWO) NPD results were down for the quarter relative to his estimates, the analyst remains comfortable with his forecasts due to contributions not counted by NPD. Olson keeps Overweight ratings on Activision, Take-Two and Electronic Arts (EA).

Baird sees more risk for GameStop from Xbox Game Pass
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian believes Microsoft's (MSFT) new Xbox Game Pass subscription "further raises the risk profile" for GameStop (GME). The subscription service could add another layer of competitive pressure, Sebastian tells investors in an intraday research note. He believes Xbox Game Pass, which is similar to existing programs offered by Sony (SNE) and Electronic Arts (EA), underscores the importance of GameStop's diversification strategy. Sebastian keeps an Outperform rating on the shares with a $24 price target, but prefers additional pullbacks to put new money to work. GameStop is down 6% to $24.86 in early afternoon trading.

Wedbush has questions about potential success of Nintendo Switch
Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter argued earlier Tuesday that the pricing and software lineup for Nintendo's (NTDOY) new "Switch" gaming console "raise questions" about its chance of success. The device, which combines a tablet design with the ability for TV docking, will launch on March 3 at $300, which Pachter notes is not more affordable than existing consoles from Sony (SNE) and Microsoft (MSFT). The analyst concedes that Nintendo is clearly betting on the Switch's unique gameplay possibilities, but argues that it still needs to convince a larger audience outside of its core fans and that Nintendo is unlikely to attract much support for the "underpowered" device from external game developers. Reiterating a Neutral rating and Y15,000 price target on Nintendo shares, Pachter forecasts Switch unit sales of 1M and 5M in FY17 and FY18, respectively.

Broadcom should prioritize cash returns over M&A, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Craig Hettenbach prefers Broadcom prioritize cash returns over large deals and focus on executing on its core business, expand margins, and increase the amount of free-cash-flow to shareholders. He expects management to stay the course and not do M&A for the sake of it, but approach it with strategic focus on "tuck-in" deals that add differentiated, high margin technology. Hettenbach raised his free cash flow estimates and now sees the potential for Broadcom to increase the dividend by +65% this year, advising investors to be patient when adding to positions. The analyst rates Broadcom an Overweight with a $245 price target and $305 bull case.

Qualcomm selloff on Apple litigation overdone, says Canaccord
Canaccord analyst T. Michael Walkley believes the selloff in Qualcomm (QCOM) shares on the Apple (AAPL) litigation is overdone.
