On The Fly: Top stock stories for Friday

Stocks began the session little changed after the disappointing monthly jobs data but the averages drifted higher throughout the morning. The S&P and Dow settled into a range near noon and mostly moved sideways from there, while the Nasdaq continued to lead and finished the day with nearly a 1% advance. By afternoon the news flow had slowed and the volume became lighter, but the market held its gains into the close with all three major averages finishing the week at all-time closing highs. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., the monthly jobs report showed nonfarm payrolls grew by 138,000, versus expectations for the addition of 182,000 jobs. The unemployment rate moved to 4.3% from the prior month's 4.4%. The U.S. trade deficit rose to $47.6B in April from $43.7B in March. In energy news, Baker Hughes reported that the U.S. rig count is up 8 rigs from last week to 916. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Broadcom Limited (AVGO) advanced 8.5% after the wireless component supplier's better than expected Q2 results... Lululemon's (LULU) shares jumped 11.5% following the "athleisure" retailer's better than expected Q1 results. Another retailer, RH (RH), did not fare as well following its quarterly report, as shares dropped by over 25% after the parent of the Restoration Hardware brand lowered its fiscal year profit guidance... In M&A news, Blackstone (BX) announced that real estate funds managed by the company agrred to sell Logicor to affiliates of China Investment Corporation for EUR12.25B. The transaction is expected to close later this year... Meanwhile, Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD) shares rose nearly 2% after the company announced that Sally Smith notified the board of her decision to retire as chief executive officer before the end of the year. The Buffalo Wild Wings board has intiated a search process and will engage an executive search firm to help find a successor. In addition, Marcato capital, which owns roughly 9.9% of the outstanding common shares of Buffalo Wild Wings, said that the restaurant chain's shareholders elected Marcato's nominees Scott Bergren, Sam Rovit and Mick McGuire to the restaurant chain operator's board... In addition, Harley-Davidson (HOG) shares were in focus after the National Highway Traffic Administration said that the company was recalling roughly 46,000 motorcycles due to a faulty clamp used to secure an engine oil cooler line. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Synergy Pharmaceuticals (SGYP), which advanced 10% to $4 per share after Cantor Fitzgerald initiated coverage of the stock with an Overweight rating and an $11 price target. Also higher was Cooper Companies (COO), which gained 8.6% after reporting better than expected quarterly results raising its earnings and revenue guidance for fiscal 2017. Among the noteworthy losers after earnings were Zumiez (ZUMZ) and Hovnanian (HOV), which dropped 12% and 5.5%, respectively. Also lower was Pinnacle Foods (PF), which fell 6.4% after CNBC's David Faber reported that talks regarding a potential acquisition by Conagra (CAG) have come to an end without an agreement being reached. Conagra dipped about 1% lower after the news. INDEXES: The Dow rose 62.11, or 0.29%, to 21,206.29, the Nasdaq gained 58.97, or 0.94%, to 6,305.80, and the S&P 500 advanced 9.01, or 0.37%, to 2,439.07.

In a post-earnings research note titled "Bras are the New Women's Bottoms," Barclays analyst Matthew McClintock says he believes the worst is now behind lululemon. Despite "significant" operational miscues, the company posted a quarter "that most retailers in today's environment would love to have," McClintock writes. Wedbush calls proxy vote irrelevant, cuts Buffalo Wild Wings to sell
Wedbush analyst Nick Setyan downgraded Buffalo Wild Wings to Underperform from Neutral and lowered his price target for the shares to $115 from $150. The restaurant chain closed Friday down $2.25 to $151.00. The upcoming proxy vote is irrelevant as neither management's strategy nor Marcato Capital's plan offer a viable solution to the company's ongoing deterioration in fundamentals, Setyan tells investors in a research note. Underperform is Wedbush's equivalent to a sell rating.

Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Ambarella (AMBA) downgraded to Sector Weight from Overweight at Pacific Crest with analyst Brad Erickson citing concern the company's largest customer DJI may have dual-sourced. After speaking with DJI customer service, Erickson believes Ambarella may not be the video processing provider for Spark, the $499 drone launched last week by DJI. 2. Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD) downgraded to Underperform from Neutral at Wedbush with analyst Nick Setyan saying the upcoming proxy vote is irrelevant as neither management's strategy nor Marcato Capital's plan offer a viable solution to the company's ongoing deterioration in fundamentals. 3. Valero (VLO) downgraded to Equal Weight from Overweight at Morgan Stanley with analyst Benny Wong citing refining headwinds and high exposure to RIN prices. 4. AutoZone (AZO) and O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY) were downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at Wedbush. 5. Whiting Petroleum (WLL) was downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Goldman Sachs, while Cimarex Energy (XEC) and Hess Corp. (HES) were downgraded to Neutral from Buy. Buffalo Wild Wings can refocus with board fight settled, says Deutsche Bank
After Buffalo Wild Wings CEO Sally Smith announced that she would be retiring from the company by year end or sooner and investors elected three of Marcato's four nominees to the company's board, Deutsche Bank analyst Brett Levy said he believes management can now re-focus on improving fundamentals and cutting costs. The changes also create a greater likelihood the company will accelerate its pace of change and explore other initiatives, added Levy, who keeps a Buy rating and $180 price target on the stock.
