U.S. Steel is '2019 story,' says Axiom
After meeting with U.S. Steel's new CEO, Dave Burritt, Axiom analyst Gordon Johnson believes that the company is viewing the next 18-24 months as "a restructuring period" that will feature higher spending on "asset revitalization." The analyst quotes Burritt as saying that he expects Congress to pass a "large bi- partisan infrastructure bill in mid-'18, bearing fruit in '19." Johnson now sees U.S. Steel as a "2019 story," and he warns that the company is likely to miss its $1B 2017 EBITDA guidance due to higher spending on asset revitalization. Johnson keeps a Sell rating on the stock.

American Airlines downgraded to Neutral from Overweight at JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Jamie Baker downgraded American Airlines (AAL) to Neutral saying he's troubled by the company's $1B wealth transfer to labor groups. American disclosed yesterday that it chose to harmonize its flight attendant and pilot wage rates with those of Delta (DAL) and United (UAL), driving increases of roughly 5% and 8%, respectively, over the remainder of current contracts, Baker tells investors in a research note. This will drive an estimated $230M in increased 2017 labor expense, followed by increases of $350M in both 2018 and 2019, the analyst adds. The agreement "establishes a worrying precedent" both for American and the industry, Baker tells investors. The analyst cut his price target for American shares to $52 from $59. Morgan Stanley makes "big" cuts to US Auto Sales forecasts
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas made "big" cuts to his US auto industry sales forecast, reducing his 2017 US SAAR forecast to 17.3M units from 18.3M units, 2018 to 16.4M units from 18.9M units, 2019 to 15M units from 19.2M units, and 2020 to 15M units from 18.7M units. Jonas believes the auto cycle may be hitting a point of diminishing returns following 8 years into the biggest cycle on record as used car values erode, pressuring conditions for selling new vehicles, and said new vehicle inventory levels continue to rise. Additionally, the analyst expects electrical margins to face increasing competition from new entrants and higher development costs. As a result, Jonas cut estimates across the board and downgraded Lear (LEA) to Underweight from Equal Weight.

Ford upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Barclays
Barclays analyst Brian Johnson upgraded Ford Motor (F) to Overweight from Equal Weight and raised his price target for the shares to $15 from $13. The automaker closed yesterday down 3c to $12.28. Johnson this morning also upgraded Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) to Equal Weight and kept an Equal Weight rating on General Motors (GM). Any way you look at it, Ford looks better positioned than both GM and Fiat in a border adjustment scenario, Johnson tells investors in a research note. The analyst points out that Ford has a higher mix of its North American unit production in the U.S. relative to the other two carmakers. Should a boarder adjustment tax be levied by President Trump, the analyst estimates only $3.6B for Ford versus $10.4B for GM and $18B for Fiat. Even in a "chicken tax" scenario, or a 25% duty on cargo-carrying light trucks, Ford would be better positioned, Johnson contends.

The analyst raised its price target to $45 from $35. 3. Chipotle (CMG) upgraded to Hold from Sell at Maxim with analyst Stephen Anderson saying that even though its fourth quarter results were only in-line with downward revised expectations its two-year comps "improved considerably" in January, leading him to believe that the "worst may be over" for the troubled restaurant operator. The analyst, who believes "Chipotle 2.0" represents an opportunity for sales upside, raised his price target on the stock to $390 from $280. 4. Ball Corp (BLL) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Vertical Research with analyst Chip Dillon citing valuation. 5.
