Investor questions Energous' distance charging as hoax, Yahoo Finance says

An independent investor has raised the concern that distance wireless charging may be a hoax after a demonstration by Energous CEO Steve Rizzone in 2015 in which he appears to show through-the-air charging through radio waves, David Pogue of Yahoo Finance reports, citing the investor. According to Pogue, the investor had some valid questions about the technology in regards to shipping delays, the transmitter's use of Bluetooth, and FCC rules which don't yet permit a product to transmit enough power to charge a phone from a distance. Rizzone said the delay is due to a partnership with Dialog and the development of three products and the company is working to meet the requirements of the FCC with products expected to ship this fall. JPMorgan says Broadcom will power wireless charging in iPhone
JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur says his research indicates that Broadcom (AVGO), working with Apple (AAPL), has developed a chip solution that will be used to power the wireless charging functionality on the iPhone platform. Sur is confident that when Apple decides to embed the wireless charging capability in the iPhone, it will be a Broadcom based solution. It is unclear whether Apple will add the wireless charging capability on the iPhone 8, Sur tells investors in a research note. He estimates the wireless charging design win could add $500M-$600M in annualized revenue for Broadcom. The analyst reiterates an Overweight rating on the shares with a $230 price target. The stock closed yesterday up 58c to $208.18. Energous (WATT) is often speculated as a benefactor from the growth of wireless charging.

Cowen says Energous 'exceedingly unlikely' to power Apple charging
Supply chain channel checks indicate that Apple (AAPL) is "getting on board" with wireless charging for the tenth anniversary iPhone, Cowen analyst Timothy Arcuri tells investors in a research note. The checks suggest Broadcom (AVGO) is the likely chip suppler, the analyst points out. Arcuri believes that Energous (WATT), contrary to media reports, is "exceedingly unlikely" to be the choice for Apple. He believes Apple will select a standards-based solution supporting Airfuel resonant and possibly Qi. Shares of Energous closed Friday down 8% to $15.47 after JPMorgan declared Broadcom as the likely chipmaker behind Apple's wireless charging.

JPMorgan now confident Broadcom's wireless charging is in upcoming iPhone
JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur says his recent work indicates Apple (AAPL) will integrate Broadcom's (BRCM) wireless charging chip into its upcoming iPhone launch in the second half of 2017. In his initial report on the subject in February, Sur was unclear whether or not Apple would be integrating wireless charging into this year's iPhone launch. The February report sent shares of Energous (WATT) lower. Since that report, Sur has learned that Broadcom is getting set to commence manufacturing production of the wireless charging chip with its foundry partners in May. Sur believes Apple will also use Broadcom's next generation WiFi/Bluetooth combo chip and maybe two ASIC chips instead of one. There is at least a $2-$3 step-up in dollar content per phone from the new wireless charging chip, new touch controller chips and upgraded wireless connectivity content in the upcoming iPhones, which is "significantly" higher than what the market is anticipating, Sur tells investors in a research note. He reiterates an Overweight rating on Broadcom with a $260 price target. The stock closed yesterday up 51c to $221.32.
