On The Fly: Top stock stories at midday

Stocks opened little changed and remained that way throughout the morning. The market remains at all-time highs and investors appear content to sit on the sidelines awaiting the pick-up in the earnings reporting season, which will continue when Netflix posts its results after the close. Meanwhile, oil prices are little changed as OPEC executives meet. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., Empire manufacturing index headline reading for July fell to 9.8 from a 3-year high of 19.8 in June. In Asia, China's Q2 GDP growth came in at 6.9%, topping the consensus forecast for 6.8% growth. Measures of June activity also pointed to strength in the economy, as readings on industrial production and retail sales came in above expectations. COMPANY NEWS: Trian Fund Management, which owns approximately $3.3B of Procter & Gamble (PG) shares, filed a proxy statement for the election of CEO and Founding Partner Nelson Peltz, to the company's Board of Directors. In response, P&G said it has maintained an "active and constructive dialogue" with Trian since it made its investment in the company, but also said Trian "has not provided any new or actionable ideas to drive additional value for P&G shareholders" beyond the company's existing strategic plan. While speaking on CNBC after the disclosure of his plan for a proxy fight, Peltz said that Procter & Gamble has not lived up to its potential "in some time." MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was General Cable (BGC), which jumped 12% after the company announced that its Board has initiated a review of strategic alternatives, including a potential sale of the company. Also higher was Hortonworks (HDP), which gained 12% after Craig-Hallum analyst Chad Bennett started the stock with a Buy rating and $23 price target, saying that the company has a multi-year tailwind as the true open-source provider for data management that should drive sustained 25% revenue growth. Among the noteworthy losers was Blue Apron (APRN), which dropped 11% after a media report saying Amazon (AMZN) has filed a trademark that makes it appear the e-commerce giant is getting into the meal kit business. Also lower was TherapeuticsMD (TXMD), which has slid 7% after the company provided a regulatory update on the status of its New Drug Application for TX-004HR, its investigational softgel capsule for the treatment of moderate-to-severe vaginal pain during sexual intercourse. INDEXES: Near 1 pm ET, the Dow was up 13.63, or 0.06%, to 21,651.37, the Nasdaq was up 10.30, or 0.16%, to 6,322.77, and the S&P 500 was up 2.56, or 0.1%, to 2,461.83.

Procter & Gamble unlikely to miss near-term expectations, says Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Faiza Alwy believes Procter & Gamble's decision to not give Trian's Nelson Peltz a board seat as a sign that management is confident in its strategy and is unlikely to miss expectations over at least the next few months. The analyst notes the Wall Street Journal's reporting indicates that contrary to speculation from analysts, Trian is not seeking a breakup of the company. This idea was a non-starter given substantial dis-synergies and tax leakage, Alwy tells investors in a research note. The analyst keeps a Hold rating on the shares with a $90 price target.

Trade Desk wins Procter & Gamble as a customer, says Susquehanna
As reported by AdvertisingAge today, Procter & Gamble (PG) is moving its DSP business to Trade Desk's (TTD) platform in North America, as well as other geographies. Susquehanna analyst Shyam Patil said the win broadens Trade Desk's base of Tier 1 advertising partners and validates the company's market leadership and its ability to rapidly gain programmatic share. The analyst rates Trade Desk a Positive with a $41 price target.

On The Fly: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. MetLife (MET) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at BofA/Merrill with analyst Seth Weiss saying shares are now trading above the level of the disappointing fourth quarter earnings report and prefers Prudential (PRU) given it benefits more from improving interest rates and easing regulations. 2. Procter & Gamble (PG) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at B. Riley with analyst Linda Bolton Weiser saying that while the stock is up 11% from the December low, the company's fundamentals have weakened. The analyst cut her price target for the shares to $91 from $106. 3. GoPro (GPRO) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Goldman with analyst Simona Jankowski saying the company faces "significant challenges" amid camera market saturation, product rollout issues in the holiday season, and a disappointing entry into the drone market. The analyst sees risk to consensus estimates and views the stock as overvalued. 4. Hawaiian Electric (HE) downgraded to Underperform from In Line at Evercore ISI with analyst Greg Gordon saying he believes the risk/return for shares is skewed to the downside and estimates a "significantly lower total return" compared to other utilities he covers. He maintains a $31 price target on Hawaiian Electric shares. 5. Akorn (AKRX) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank with analyst Gregg Gilbert saying the risk/reward is more balanced following the recent rally in the shares. Upside from current levels will have more to do with the "hard-to-call dynamics of new product approvals vs. base business erosion," Gilbert tells investors in a research note. He cut his price target for the shares to $24 from $28. This list is just a portion of The Fly's full analyst coverage. To see The Fly's full Street Research coverage, click here.

Blue Apron initiated with a Sell, $2 target at Northcoast
Northcoast analyst Chuck Cerankosky started recently public Blue Apron with a Sell rating and $2 price target, as he sees it facing considerable competition not only from other online meal kit providers but also from conventional supermarkets that are increasingly focused on selling meal kits. Blue Apron has very high labor and shipping costs while its sales growth seems to be dependent on promotional discounts as of yet, added Cerankosky, who expects the company to continue to post losses.

JPMorgan keeps Underweight on Nordstrom after management meetings
JPMorgan analyst Matthew Boss keeps an Underweight rating on Nordstrom (JWN) after meeting management at the company's headquarters. Management would not comment on their evaluation of strategic alternatives and the meeting was reshuffled to exclude members of the Nordstrom family while incoming CFO Anne Bramman attended but did not actively participate, Boss tells investors in a research note. The analyst views the company's EBITDA roadmap as "increasingly uncertain" with a greater emphasis on fashion to differentiate mix versus Amazon.com (AMZN) and rising costs of customer acquisition. He believes the retailer's fundamental multi-year risk profile is elevated.

Amazon can be big threat to Williams-Sonoma, says Barclays
Following an analysis that compares product overlap, Barclays analyst Matthew McClintock believes Amazon.com (AMZN) can be a "considerable threat" to Williams-Sonoma (WSM). The analyst estimates that 50% of the first 10 "Top Rated" items by category listed on Williams-Sonoma's website have exact overlap with Amazon. Further, McClintock found that Amazon beat on price on 50 of the 69 items, or 73%. The analyst says he's bearish on Williams-Sonoma following his analysis. In a research note titled "The Next AMZN Shoe to Drop?", he keeps an Underweight rating on the shares with a $40 price target.

Hortonworks can beat revenue expectations, could be acquired, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Zane Chrane says that Hortonworks can beat long-term revenue expectations and is a potential takeover target. The analyst calls the stock "a cheap call option" on growth in Big Data and IoT. However, he adds that the stock could be volatile in the near to medium term, partly due to its cash burn and competitive threats. He expects the company's cash flow to turn positive in Q4 and keeps a $21 price target and an Outperform rating on the stock.

On The Fly: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. PayPal (PYPL) downgraded to Hold on valuation at Stifel with analyst Scott Devitt saying shares have reached his price target of $51 but said the company remains well positioned for long-term growth. 2. Etsy (ETSY) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Citi with analyst Mark Kelley saying that while the stock has run on the company's review of alternatives, a takeover is not imminent. The stock could be worth $21-$22 if Etsy is acquired, but $7 if the company remains a stand-alone with little to no improvement in operational performance, Kelley tells investors in a research note. He tells investors to hold the stock if already involved and raised his price target for the shares to $14 from $13. 3. Fang Holdings (SFUN) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at UBS with the firm citing valuation and saying the eCommerce services and primary housing advertising still faces market risks and execution uncertainty. 4. Maximus (MMS) downgraded to Sector Weight from Overweight at KeyBanc with analyst Jason Gurda citing valuation and the current "pause" in federal procurement activity that could be longer and deeper than expected. 5. TherapeuticsMD scheduled to meet FDA on June 14, says Stifel
Stifel analyst Annabel Samimy says TherapeuticsMD's Type A meeting with the FDA to discuss last month's Complete Response Letter is scheduled for June 14. The analyst sees two likely scenarios from the meeting. The first has TherapeuticsMD seeking class labeling with a Phase 4 post-marketing study to eventually amend the label. And the second has the company seeking an appeal should FDA hold firm in the 12-month safety requirement to justify a differentiated label. Samimy is "convinced" that TX-004HR remains approvable and she keeps a Buy rating on the shares with a $20 price target.

TherapeuticsMD could use data to push post-approval study, says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Matthew Andrews says that TherapeuticsMD could use prior data - including a finding that low-dose vaginal estrogen is safe for women with breast cancer and a finding that estrogen delivered in a patch is safe for two years - to convince an FDA panel to allow the company to address concerns raised in a complete response letter for its TX-004 drug with a post-approval study instead of a pre-approval study. Andrews keeps a $15 price target and a buy rating on the shares.

Oppenheimer analyst Jay Olson upgraded TherapeuticsMD to Outperform from Perform with a $10 price target. The stock closed yesterday down 21c to $4.80. Details of the company's meeting with the FDA are likely to be announced around July 14 and there is a "reasonable probability" of positive news, Olson tells investors in a research note. Evidence supports a scenario where TherapeuticsMD is likely to resubmit TX-004HR by July 31 with a potential FDA approval by September 29 in the best case, the analyst adds. He assigns a 60% probability to this scenario.
