Average net charge-off rate for card issuers highest in four years, WSJ says

Reversing a six year trend, credit card losses are increasing, which may be a red flag for the markets and the overall economy, says the Wall Street Journal. The ratio of outstanding debt that U.S card issuers write off as a loss, known as the average net charge-off jumped to 3.29% in Q2, the highest percentage in four years. Publicly traded companies in the space include: Bank of America (BAC), Citi (C), Goldman Sachs (GS), JPMorgan (JPM), Morgan Stanley (MS), U.S. Bancorp (USB) Wells Fargo (WFC), Capital One (COF), Visa (V), MasterCard (MA) and American Express(AXP). Visa, Cognizant added to Best Ideas List, FIS removed at Wedbush
Pre-open, Wedbush added Visa (V) and Cognizant (CTSH) to the Best Ideas List, and removed FIS (FIS) . Analyst Moshe Katri believes Cognizant digital revenue mix is 600 bps higher than reported, placing it as a top digital player among Tier 1 peers, which should provide incremental revenue growth and shield it from pricing compression in the legacy business. Katri thinks Visa's cost synergies from VE integration will prove conservative given Visa's knowledge of the business model and substantial pricing differential between VE and MasterCard (MA), as Visa continues to renew VE's book of business. Finally, the firm's research department removed FIS primarly due to lack of near-term catalysts.

Deutsche Bank raises price targets for Visa, MasterCard
Deutsche Bank analyst Bryan Keane raised his price target for Visa (V) to $122 from $103 and for MasterCard (MA) to $150 from $124. The analyst believes push payments have the potential to contribute an incremental 5% to net revenue growth for both companies over the next five years and help drive 20%-plus annual earnings growth. He reiterates Buy ratings on both stocks with a preference for Visa over MasterCard. Push payments, also known as buyer-initiated payments or straight through processing, "ride the network rails and hence offer all the benefits of card payments with more security as the payer pushes funds instead of the payee pulling funds from an account," Keane explains.

Wells downgrades Credit Card sector on credit concerns
Wells Fargo analyst Jason Harbes downgraded his rating on the Credit Card space to Market Weight from Overweight after attending Card Forum 2017 in Austin, Texas. The analyst keeps Overweight ratings on Synchrony (SYF) and Discover (DFS) and Market Perform ratings on American Express (AXP) and Capital One (COF). Credit trends have recently deteriorated primarily due to weaker underwriting, Harbes tells investors in a research note. The analyst is also concerned about slowing receivables growth following an extended period of acceleration from 2012-2016. He lowered his price target for Synchrony to $30 from $35, for Discover to $70 from $80 and for Capital One to $85 from $88. The analyst keeps an $80 target on American Express.

Big bank set-up not great, would sell into extended rally, says Baird
Baird analyst David George does not see a great set-up for money-center banks heading into Q2 earnings. He said the trade looks crowded and he would be a seller into an extended rally. George said the risk/reward is less attractive following the sector's most recent rally as economic growth remains muted and the pace of NIM expansion may slow. George believes the biggest potential catalyst would be a gradual steepening of the yield curve and pick-up on loan growth.
