On The Fly: Top stock stories for Tuesday

Stocks began the session in negative territory, but the averages almost immediately began to drift off their lows. By the end of the first hour of trading they'd managed to move back into the green. From there the indexes drifted in a narrow range until late in the session, when strong words from President Trump to North Korea were pointed to as a possible reason for a market pullback. Oil prices closed lower by roughly 0.5% with investors on inventory watch as they await the release of the API report after the close. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., the JOLTS report showed job openings surged 461,000 to a record high level of 6.163M in June. In Asia, China exports rose 7.2% and imports grew 11% in July, both of which missed expectations. In Europe, Germany's June trade figures also came in light, with exports falling 2.8% and imports sliding 4.5%, versus expectations for both to risen fractionally. COMPANY NEWS: Two higher end apparel makers - Michael Kors (KORS) and Ralph Lauren (RL) - were among the leading stocks on the S&P 500 after both reported better than expected quarterly sales and profits. Michael Kors, which also gave a better than expected outlook for the fiscal year, jumped 21.5% on the back of its earnings report, while Ralph Lauren shares rose over 13%... CVS Health (CVS) shares were 0.7% lower after posting what Baird analyst Eric Coldwell called a "mixed" Q2 report. He noted that the company's quarterly earnings and revenue topped consensus, but its 2017 EBIT guidance was lowered and its initial $1.8B of net PBM wins were "modest." Additionally, Bloomberg reported that the pharmacy giant has been sued by a California woman claiming CVS overbilled consumers who used insurance to pay for certain generic drugs and wrongfully concealed the fact that the medicines' cash price was cheaper. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the other gainers following their earnings reports were Jacobs Engineering (JEC), LendingClub (LC) and Twilio (TWLO). Among the noteworthy losers was Depomed (DEPO), which fell 33.5% after the company reported weaker than expected second quarter results and lowered its guidance. Reacting to the announcement, Janney Capital and Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock to Neutral and Underweight, respectively. Also lower following their earnings reports were Dean Foods (DF), Avis Budget (CAR) and Wayfair (W). INDEXES: The Dow fell 33.08, or 0.15%, to 22,085.34, the Nasdaq lost 13.31, or 0.21%, to 6,370.46, and the S&P 500 declined 5.99, or 0.24%, to 2,474.92.

Insurers are dropping Valeant's top products, says Wells Fargo
United Healthcare's (UNH) formulary is no longer covering Valeant Pharmaceuticals' (VRX) number three branded drug Solodyn and will also now exclude Retin-A brand, its number four branded drug, Wells Fargo analyst David Maris tells investors in a research note. The analyst estimates the two drugs represented approximately $214M of Valeant's sales in 2016. Maris also points out that Glumetza, Valeant's number eight branded drug, and Relistor were removed in July from CVS/Caremark's (CVS) formulary. These two drugs had approximately $119M in 2016 revenues. Maris notes his counterpart Peter Costa estimates that United Healthcare covers approximately 17% of the U.S. and CVS covers approximately 33%.
