On The Fly: Top stock stories for Thursday

Stocks began the day in positive territory but saw their highs shortly after the open. The averages quickly moved back below the flat line, after which they drifted with little in the way of a catalyst to get the market moving amid the summer doldrums. Investors will be watching the Jackson Hole conference, which began today and will feature speeches from Fed Chair Janet Yellen and ECB President Mario Draghi tomorrow. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., initial jobless claims rose to 234,000 in the third week of August, compared to the consensus forecast for 238,000 first-time claims. Existing home sales declined 1.3% to a 5.44M home rate in July, which was worse than expected. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of multiple grocers dropped after Amazon (AMZN) said that its acquisition of Whole Foods Market (WFM) will close on Monday, August 28. As part of the announcement, Amazon said that Whole Foods will offer lower prices starting Monday on a selection of grocery staples across its stores, with more to come. After the announcement, shares of Wal-Mart (WMT), Target (TGT), Kroger (KR), Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM), Costco (COST) and Supervalu (SVU) fell between 2% to 8%... Shares of HP Inc. (HPQ) advanced about 3% after the company reported in-line earnings, revenue that beat estimates and raised the low end of its guidance. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the noteworthy gainers after earnings were Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) and Signet Jewelers (SIG), which each advanced about 17%. Also higher was Beacon Roofing (BECN), which gained 10% after it agreed to acquire Allied Building Products from CRH (CRH) for $2.625B in cash. Among the notable losers were Hormel (HRL) and J.M. Smucker (SJM), which each fell after cutting their guidance. INDEXES: The Dow fell 28.69, or 0.13%, to 21,783.40, the Nasdaq lost 7.08, or 0.11%, to 6,271.33, and the S&P 500 declined 5.07, or 0.21%, to 2,438.97.

Energizer recent drop a 'terrific' opportunity to buy, says Citi
Citi analyst Wendy Nicholson attributes the 30% pullback in Energizer (ENR) shares over the last four months to several factors, including fears about Amazon (AMZN), the pressure on sales from the company's portfolio repositioning, the departure of its "well-regarded" CFO and the lack of "meaningful" share buybacks from the company. However, after meeting with management, she continues to see the stock as a "high-conviction" Buy and views the dip as a "terrific" buying opportunity. Nicholson has a $54 price target on Energizer shares.

Wal-Mart, Alphabet deal to increase competition for Amazon, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc says that the partnership deal announced today between Wal-Mart (WMT) and Alphabet (GOOG,GOOGL) will intensify the competition facing Amazon (AMZN). The firm says that the deal will give consumers the capacity to obtain Wal-Mart products through voice ordering. Voice ordering had previously been a competitive advantage of Amazon, according to the firm ,which adds that Wal-Mart's acquisitions and investments have improved its e-commerce offerings.

Much uncertainty remains around Impinj pushouts, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Brad Erickson says that given the potential number of customers materially impacted by Impinj's (PI) 2H outlook, he continues to lack clarity on what drove the simultaneous delays across several tag IC end users. Nonetheless, the analyst still believes RFID adoption is rising, which keeps his general long-term thesis intact. Based on his conversation with Amazon's (AMZN) principal engineer at the RAIN RFID Alliance in Seattle, the Amazon bull case of tens of billions of units could be in play longer-term. With that said, he is equally as convinced that Amazon may not be a massive buyer of tag ICs for the foreseeable future. He reiterates a Sector Weight rating on Impinj's shares.

Piper survey shows 16% plan to use grocery delivery in 2017
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says his firm's survey of 1,366 consumers suggests 16% of adult consumers expect to use a grocery delivery service in 2017. Amazon.com (AMZN) is well positioned to capture market share, through both the company's existing initiatives and the Whole Foods (WFM) acquisition, Olson tells investors in a research note. The analyst recommends buying shares of Amazon.com on the recent weakness. He believes selloffs around margin-related misses can prove to be good buying opportunities. Olson keeps an Overweight rating on Amazon with a $1,200 price target. The shares closed yesterday down 3%, or $32.26, to $987.78.

Morgan finds nearly 25% have tried online, but 'stores still matter' in grocery
Morgan Stanley analysts Vincent Sinisi and Brian Nowak said the firm's survey work shows that 24% of people have ordered groceries online at least once in the last 3 months, but that was mostly through traditional grocers' websites. Also, they believe share of wallet is materially lower, likely in the low single digits in terms of overall penetration. The survey findings lead them to conclude that "brick and mortar matters in grocery," which speaks to why Amazon (AMZN) is trying to acquire Whole Foods (WFM). The need for e-commerce expansion could pressure margins for traditional operators like Kroger (KR), the analysts add.

Weak spending from Hispanic consumers likely temporary, says Jefferies
A team of Jefferies analysts note that several consumer companies have flagged weakness from Hispanic consumers during this earnings season, which they attribute to likely being linked to uncertainty around immigration policy more than a result of a deteriorating economic backdrop. Companies that have been hurt may be due for a rebound as this is assumed to be a short term phenomenon and some have already noted improvement, the team tells investors. Some of the companies that recently have specifically flagged weakness in Hispanic spending include Foot Locker (FL), Murphy USA (MUSA), O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY), Target (TGT), Valvoline (VVV) and Wingstop (WING), the firm noted.

FBR lowers Specialty Retail price targets ahead of Q2 reports
FBR Capital analyst Susan Anderson expects Specialty Retail earnings in Q2 to be overall in-line with consensus estimates, with a lighter top line and gross margin given the need to promote to drive traffic. Abercrombie's inability to land a deal not surprising, says Jefferies
