On The Fly: Top stock stories for Friday

Stocks opened in positive territory helped in part by better than expected earnings from tech names including Splunk (SPLK) and Autodesk (ADSK). Despite the solid reports from the tech side, the Nasdaq was the first index to falter and eventually gave up its early gains. The Dow and S&P lost some steam following a benign speech by Fed Chair Janet Yellen, in which she did not comment much on the economic outlook. The averages drifted from there until the closing bell, but the positive closes for the major averages helped them cap a winning week. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., durable goods orders dropped 6.8% in July, which was worse than expected. However, excluding transportation, orders were up 0.5%, which beat estimates. At the Jackson Hole symposium hosted by the Federal Reserve, Fed Chair Janet Yellen's prepared remarks included little comment on policy, saying only that substantial progress has been made on maximum employment and price stability. In energy news, Baker Hughes reported that the U.S. rig count is down 6 rigs from last week to 940 rigs. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Ulta Beauty (ULTA) fell 9.14% after the high-flier reported quarterly comparable sales growth that declined from last year. Following the report, BMO Capital analyst Shannon Coyne downgraded the stock, citing the slowing beauty market, department stores becoming more promotional and better targeting beauty consumers and Amazon (AMZN) gaining ground in the mass market and potentially gaining access to prestige brands... Meanwhile, Platform Specialty Products (PAH), which lists Bill Ackman's Pershing Square among its major investors, slid 4.88% after announcing it has decided the best way to maximize long-term value for shareholders is by separating its Agricultural Solutions business as a standalone public company. The announcement came right after yesterday's report from Reuters that Platform Specialty abandoned its plan to sell its agrochemicals unit after the offers it drew failed to meet its expectations. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Pure Storage (PSTG), which rose 19% after reporting earnings and naming former Cisco (CSCO) executive Charles Giancarlo as its new CEO. Also higher following their earnings reports were Splunk and Marvell Technology (MRVL), which advanced 8.5% and 7.5%, respectively. Among the noteworthy losers was GameStop (GME), which dropped 10.9% after the game retailer's Q2 earnings were a bit below expectations and it reiterated its full year profit guidance. Also lower following their earnings reports were Veeva (VEEV), which fell 13.6%, and Big Lots (BIG), which slid almost 1%. INDEXES: The Dow rose 30.27, or 0.14%, to 21,813.67, the Nasdaq dipped 5.68, or 0.09%, to 6,265.64, and the S&P 500 advanced 4.08, or 0.17%, to 2,443.05.

Thill, who thinks Twitter will underperform broader internet and social peers, acknowledged that investors might ask why he is not advising to sell the stock, but he thinks recent management changes could improve the company's declining ARPU in the near-term. 2. Ulta Beauty (ULTA) downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at BMO Capital by analyst Shannon Coyne, who said that there are bright spots ahead for the company, but sees "clouds on the horizon" looking ahead, including a slowing beauty market and department stores that are "upping their collective game." 3. Hormel Foods (HRL) downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at Credit Suisse by analyst Robert Moskow, who said increased volatility in the protein markets has reduced earnings visibility and his confidence in FY2020 margin targets of 15-19%. Moskow sees further risk from the pork industry's 10% expansion in slaughter capacity. 4. TripAdvisor (TRIP) and Shutterstock (SSTK) downgraded to Underperform from Hold at Jefferies. 5. Domino's Pizza (DPZ) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Argus by analyst John Staszak due to concerns about slowing international revenue combined with a potential for a comparable slowdown in domestic sales. Kroger, Sprouts unlikely to be hurt much by Amazon move, says SunTrust
After Amazon (AMZN) announced that it would cut Whole Foods (WFM) prices and supermarket stocks dropped, SunTrust analyst David Magee says he doesn't expect Kroger (KR) and Sports (SFM) to be significantly hurt by the move in the near-term. He says that Kroger's customer base is distinct from that of Whole Foods and only 10% of the company's stores are within three miles of a Whole Foods store. Additionally, he says that most of Kroger's products are "conventional," differentiating it from Whole Foods. Sprout's outlook is tied much more "to the broader pricing environment," while its current initiatives are gaining traction, Magee stated. He says, however, that Whole Foods' move could negative impact Natural Grocers (NGVC), "which does emphasize organic and has store overlap" with Whole Foods, according to the analyst.

Big Lots (BIG) upgraded to Strong Buy from Market Perform at Raymond James with analyst Dan Wewer saying all productivity metrics continue to improve as the company has pruned back underperforming stores and has focused on sales, productivity, EBIT%, ROIC, FCF, dividend growth, and buybacks. Wewer notes Big Lots' short interest has reached 33% and could be a benefit as the company delivers on on earnings and guidance. 2. Dynegy (DYN) upgraded to Hold from Sell at Deutsche Bank with analyst Abe Aza citing a balanced risk/reward with the stock down 30% since February's "disappointing" New England capacity auction results. The analyst raised his price target for the shares to $7 from $6. 3. L Brands (LB) upgraded to Buy on core comp, margin opportunity at Buckingham with the firm saying the worst of trends at Victoria's Secret are past and believes core comps and margin can improve going forward. 4. Wynn Resorts (WYNN) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Union Gaming. 5. BHP Billiton (BHP) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Citi. This list is just a portion of The Fly's full analyst coverage. Big Lots upgraded to Buy from Hold at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Paul Trussell upgraded Big Lots to Buy and raised his price target for the shares to $56 from $55. The current valuation is "compelling" given the disconnect between the company's "impressive" operating profit growth and multiple, Trussell tells investors in a research note. He sees the company's analyst day in September as a potential catalyst.

Under Armour downgraded to Sell from Hold at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Paul Trussell downgraded Under Armour (UAA) to Sell with an unchanged price target of $17. The performance apparel maker closed yesterday down 37c to $20.27. The analyst says a "difficult and promotional selling environment along with segmentation challenges" weaken his confidence in the company's near-term results. Even amid weak investor sentiment, Under Armour won't get a pass on potentially weak Q2 results, Trussell tells investors in a research note. He views the company's growth story as "challenged" and questions the "expensive" valuation. The analyst this morning also upgraded DSW (DSW) and Big Lots (BIG) to Buy.

Werner (WERN) upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at BofA/Merrill with analyst Ken Hoexter saying truckload utilization and rates are turning positive. 4. Atlassian (TEAM) upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley with analyst Sanjit Singh saying has increased confidence in expansion trends of the user base and said there are clear signs of pricing power, supporting 30% topline growth and 40% free cash flow CAGR over the next 3 years. 5.
