Retail clients ask M&A bankers to pitch Amazon on deals, FT reports

Bankers have seen an increase in requests from retail clients asking them to see if Amazon (AMZN) may be interested in acquiring the businesses following the tech giants' Whole Foods deal, the Financial Times reports, citing bankers. In addition, investors, analysts and consulting firms have been trying to identify which companies Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos might target next with GrubHub (GRUB), Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY), Target (TGT), Nordstrom (JWN), Warby Parker, and Lowe's (LOW) being possible targets. Amazon.com estimates raised to reflect Whole Foods deal at RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Mark Mahaney raised his estimates for Amazon to reflect the company's acquisition of Whole Foods. He raised his 2018 revenue estimate for the company by 8% and increased his 2018 GAAP EPS estimate by 4% to $9.79. However, if Amazon is very aggressive in cutting prices at Whole Foods, the grocery chain would raise the tech company's 2019 revenue by 7% and lower its operating profit by 2%, Mahaney estimated. He keeps an $1,100 price target and an Outperform rating on Amazon.

Aegis sees signs of start of advertising recession
After speaking with Bryan Wiener, the Executive Chairman of online and traditional advertising agency 360i, Aegis analyst Victor Anthony said that his commentary, along with earnings results from ad agencies Interpublic Group (IPG) and WPP (WPPGY), leave him of the opinion that an ad recession is underway. Wiener believes Google (GOOG), Facebook (FB) and Amazon (AMZN) will be relatively insulated given they will continue to take share, and Anthony said he would continue to buy Alphabet and Facebook shares. The analyst keeps a Hold rating on Snap (SNAP) and a Sell rating on Twitter (TWTR).

GrubHub deal kills bear thesis, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Aaron Turner says that GrubHub's (GRUB) deal with Yelp (YELP) renders the bear thesis on GrubHub "moot." The analyst explains that GrubHub's acquisition of Yelp's Eat 24 creates an entity that is so dominant that it will make competition in the space a non-factor for GrubHub. The analyst raised his price target on GrubHub to $55 from $50 and keeps an Outperform rating on the stock.

Price cuts not a 'silver bullet' for Amazon to disrupt grocery, says Citi
Citi analyst Alvin Concepcion noted that a number of food retail stocks sold off yesterday after Amazon (AMZN) announced price reductions on certain top selling items at Whole Foods (WFM) stores beginning on Monday when their deal closes, but he contends "price cuts alone are not a silver bullet to becoming a disruptive threat" in an industry that already has many discount operators. He adds that he would be wary of a more significant negative overreaction to news around Amazon's price plans at Whole Foods at this time. Some of the food retailing stocks that declined yesterday included Wal-Mart (WMT), Target (TGT), Kroger (KR), Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM), Costco (COST) and Supervalu (SVU).

Weak spending from Hispanic consumers likely temporary, says Jefferies
A team of Jefferies analysts note that several consumer companies have flagged weakness from Hispanic consumers during this earnings season, which they attribute to likely being linked to uncertainty around immigration policy more than a result of a deteriorating economic backdrop. Companies that have been hurt may be due for a rebound as this is assumed to be a short term phenomenon and some have already noted improvement, the team tells investors. Some of the companies that recently have specifically flagged weakness in Hispanic spending include Foot Locker (FL), Murphy USA (MUSA), O'Reilly Automotive (ORLY), Target (TGT), Valvoline (VVV) and Wingstop (WING), the firm noted.

JPMorgan keeps Underweight on Nordstrom after management meetings
JPMorgan analyst Matthew Boss keeps an Underweight rating on Nordstrom (JWN) after meeting management at the company's headquarters. Management would not comment on their evaluation of strategic alternatives and the meeting was reshuffled to exclude members of the Nordstrom family while incoming CFO Anne Bramman attended but did not actively participate, Boss tells investors in a research note. The analyst views the company's EBITDA roadmap as "increasingly uncertain" with a greater emphasis on fashion to differentiate mix versus Amazon.com (AMZN) and rising costs of customer acquisition. He believes the retailer's fundamental multi-year risk profile is elevated.

Home Depot, Lowe's comps historically boosted by hurricanes, says Baird
Baird analyst Peter Benedict said that homecenters such as Home Depot (HD), Lowe's (LOW) and Tractor Supply (TSCO) historically see a positive impact on their comp sales, often of 50bps-plus, during quarters when hurricanes hit. In terms of potential exposure to Hurricane Harvey, Tractor Supply has the largest mix of Texas stores, followed by Home Depot and Lowe's, according to Benedict, who added that Harvey's potential impact seems likely to be less material than Hurricane Matthew or Hurricane Sandy, but should still "net out to some modest positive impact" to Q3 comps.
