PNC Financial downgraded to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Matt O'Connor downgraded PNC Financial (PNC) to Hold as he seeks to lessen exposure to traditional banks. The analyst sees net interest income growth slowing and credit costs inching up as the Fed raises short rates and the yield curve flattens. He believes a number of positives are priced into PNC shares. O'Connor upped his price target for the stock to $136 from $130. The analyst continues to prefer banks with a "turnaround angle," like Goldman Sachs (GS) and Wells Fargo (WFC), and remains positive on capital markets businesses like Morgan Stanley (MS). O'Connor this morning also downgraded JPMorgan (JPM) to Hold.

Deutsche Bank analyst Matt O'Connor downgraded JPMorgan to Hold as he seeks to lessen exposure to traditional banks. The analyst sees net interest income growth slowing and credit costs inching up as the Fed raises short rates and the yield curve flattens. He believes further meaningful outperformance of JPMorgan shares will be harder amid increased competition within investment banking and trading as well as slowing loan growth. The analyst raised his price target for the shares to $96 from $90. The bank closed yesterday down 71c to $94.12.

Accenture, IBM to benefit from shift to AI, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Arvind Ramnani says that while the promise of Artificial Intelligence is exciting, the path is complex, which he believes provides a "unique opportunity" for IT Services firms that can accelerate its adoption. The analyst thinks Accenture (ACN), IBM (IBM), DXC Technology (DXC), and EPAM Systems (EPAM), among others, could benefit from the shift to AI.

After hosting a meeting with Deborah DiSanzo, General Manager of IBM Watson Health, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty noted that the unit grew patients that used cognitive technologies by ten times in one year to 40,000 from 4,000. Additionally, the number of hospitals using Watson for Oncology and Watson for Genomics more than doubled, to 89 from 27 last year, added Huberty. The analyst, who sees IBM as uniquely positioned to address the $2T of wasted spending on health care, keeps an Overweight rating on the stock.

Blockchain and cognitive computing IBM's best recovery chance, says UBS
UBS analyst Steven Milunovich noted IBM's (IBM) legacy business remains in decline but he thinks technologies such as blockchain and cognitive computing are its best hope for recovery. The analyst sees blockchain as a differentiated growth opportunity and he believes IBM is ahead of Microsoft (MSFT), which is also looking to monetize the technology. Milunovich said IBM's earnings momentum is mediocre and he remains concerned about the company's 2018 outlook. Milunovich maintained his Neutral rating and $152 price target on IBM shares.

IBM Infrastructure Services may not recover in 2H17, says Bernstein
After IBM predicted that the revenue growth of its Infrastructure Services, or IS, business would rebound in 2H17, Bernstein analyst A.M. (Toni) Sacconaghi, Jr says this target won't be "a slam dunk" for the company. He notes that the company's overall services backlog, which he says has historically been a good proxy for IS, is down 4% year-over-year. Additionally, he is worried " about potential financial incentives IBM may have provided to IS customers to extend/re-new existing contracts early." The analyst says the company remains "in a turnaround," and he keeps a Sector Perform rating.

'Third Wave' coffee shops still too small to hurt Starbucks, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst John Glass said the emergence of more "Third Wave" coffee shops have fueled competitive fears for Starbucks (SBUX), but he contends that the absolute numbers of specialty chains with 10 or more units remain small and most data sources show smaller chains and independents are flat to slightly declining in number. Recent high profile investments in specialty coffee, such as JAB's purchases of Stumptown and Intelligentsia and Nestle's (NSRGY) majority stake in Blue Bottle, are making headlines, but the brands' competitive relevance may be overstated, Glass tells investors. The analyst, who added that the last time McDonald's (MCD) pushed into specialty coffee it had "no discernable negative impact on Starbucks, and arguably even a positive one," keeps an Overweight rating and $62 price target on Starbucks shares.

Campbell Soup, Wal-Mart still negotiating, says Credit Suisse
Following up on Campbell Soup's (CPB) public disagreement in the soup category with Wal-Mart (WMT), Credit Suisse analyst Robert Moskow says the dispute specifically relates to Wal-Mart's demands for lower everyday price points on Campbell's condensed soup products. While this dispute does not appear to involve General Mills' (GIS) Progresso brand or the ready-to-serve category at this time, the analyst notes that Wal-Mart presumably could threaten to give more shelf space to General Mills or its Great Value brand at Campbell's expense. Campbell and Wal-Mart are still negotiating, Moskow points out, adding that it may be a good thing for the stock if Campbell can get Wal-Mart to agree to a compromise. The analyst reiterates an Underperform rating and $43 price target on Campbell's shares.

Whole Foods price cuts deep, not broad yet after Amazon deal, says Oppenheimer
Based on his analysis in New York City following Amazon (AMZN) acquisition, Oppenheimer analyst Rupesh Parikh notes Whole Foods (WFM) cut prices on select items by 22%, or $1.15 on average. The analyst would characterize Whole Foods' cuts as deep, but not broad yet. Parikh expects a heightened period of volatility for grocers to persist given competitive uncertainty, and says he does not expect Wal-Mart (WMT) and Kroger (KR) to let pricing gaps erode. As a result, the analyst would expect counter-reactions if need be to the extent Amazon gets aggressive on a basket of items versus just a few SKUs.

Nomura 'comfortable' with below consensus Akamai estimates
Nomura Instinet analyst Jeffrey Kvaal says he's "comfortable" with his estimates for Akamai Technologies (AKAM) being below the consensus. Amazon may take content delivery network traffic in-house, possibly in the near term, Kvaal tells investors in a research note. Deutsche calls Bloomberg headline on Amazon rivaling UPS, FedEx misleading
The headline of Bloomberg's story this morning on Amazon titled "Amazon Is Said to Test Own Delivery Service to Rival FedEx, UPS" is misleading, Deutsche Bank analyst Amit Mehrotra tells investors in a research note. Amazon's initiates are aimed at growing its own volumes to lower unit shipment costs, the analyst contends. He does not find it likely that Amazon at this point will invests heavily in its own network for last mile business-to-consumer deliveries. FedEx (FDX) in early trading is down $1.01 to $220.31 while UPS (UPS) is down $1.42 to $117.58.

Demand for Nvidia gaming chips remains strong, says RBC Capital
After conducting checks and reviewing Nvidia's (NVDA) 10-Q, RBC Capital analysts Mitch Steves and Amit Daryanani say that demand for Nvidia's gaming chips "remains healthy" in the midst of strong demand from crypto-currency miners. The analysts add that the company's new deal with Toyota (TM) should boost its selling volumes in 2018-2019, and cause its average selling prices to rise towards the end of that period. They add that sales of the company's Volta chip "are beginning to ramp." The analysts keep an Outperform rating on Nvidia.

Nvidia likely to continue partnering with Tesla, says RBC Capital
After CNBC and other media outlets reported that Tesla (TSLA) would work with AMD (AMD) to improve its self-driving car chips, RBC Capital analyst Mitch Steves expects Nvidia to continue to work with Tesla and remain the dominant chip provider to the automaker. He expects "similar dynamics" to play out in the data center space, with AMD "winning some share" in the sector, and Nvidia "remaining as the de-facto standard and market share leader." He notes that Toyota (TM) and Uber both use Nvidia's technology, and he does not expect the loss of share at Tesla to impact the chip maker over the long-term. He keeps an Outperform rating on Nvidia.
