On The Fly: Top stock stories for Thursday

Stocks opened little changed and remained that way for most of the session. The averages moved in a fairly narrow range before dipping late in the session as investors await the next catalyst to bring them off the sidelines. The catalyst may come next week when the earnings season kicks off in earnest. For now, investors appear content to sit on the sidelines. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., initial jobless claims dropped 15,000 to 243,000 first-time claims in the week of October 7. The headline Producer Price Index climbed 0.4% in September, with the core up 0.4% as well. The advance in the overall PPI reading was in line with expectations, though the core reading was a bit hotter than forecast. COMPANY NEWS: JPMorgan (JPM) shares fell nearly 1% after the bank's third quarter profit topped expectations, boosted by strong deposit and loan growth that offset its weaker trading results. Meanwhile, shares of peer Citi (C) fell by over 3% even though the bank also posted better than expected revenue and earnings for the third quarter. Both stocks, and the bank group in general, have been strong recently heading into the earnings season... Meanwhile, Equifax (EFX) shares slipped 1.5% after Reuters reported that Equifax said it had taken one of its customer help web pages offline as its security looks into reports of another potential cyber attack at the company. Ars Technica had reported earlier that the company's website was hacked with a redirect to fake Adobe Flash updates... Separately, shares of AT&T (T) were down 6% after the company said in a regulatory filing last night that recent hurricanes as well as earthquakes in Mexico significantly impacted certain regions of its service area during the third quarter. The carrier said that damage to its network and other property, as well as revenue declines from waived charges, will decrease its reported third quarter consolidated revenues by nearly $90M and its reported pre-tax earnings by roughly $210M, or 2c per share. The company also reaffirmed its fiscal 2017 outlook for mid-single digit adjusted earnings growth. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Glu Mobile (GLUU), which rose nearly 10% after Benchmark analyst Mike Hickey upgraded the stock to Buy and set a $6 target on the shares, saying he believes a turnaround is taking shape and that he is "cautiously optimistic" on the upcoming launch of a social platform from Taylor Swift. Also higher was Veeva (VEEV), which gained over 3.5% after holding an analyst and investor day yesterday. J.Jill (JILL) was among the noteworthy losers, seeing its stock price get cut roughly in half following yesterday's Q3 guidance reduction by the company. Also lower was MercadoLibre (MELI), which dropped 10% after Brazilian newspaper Valor Economico reported Amazon (AMZN) may make its long-awaited launch into the Brazilian e-commerce market within the week. INDEXES: The Dow fell 31.88, or 0.14%, to 22,841.01, the Nasdaq lost 12.04, or 0.18%, to 6,591.51, and the S&P 500 declined 4.31, or 0.17%, to 2,550.93.

JPMorgan downgraded to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Matt O'Connor downgraded JPMorgan to Hold as he seeks to lessen exposure to traditional banks. The analyst sees net interest income growth slowing and credit costs inching up as the Fed raises short rates and the yield curve flattens. He believes further meaningful outperformance of JPMorgan shares will be harder amid increased competition within investment banking and trading as well as slowing loan growth. The analyst raised his price target for the shares to $96 from $90. The bank closed yesterday down 71c to $94.12.

He believes a number of positives are priced into PNC shares. O'Connor upped his price target for the stock to $136 from $130. Citi may have 'even more upside potential,' says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst Mike Mayo says Citigroup remains his top bank selection, but could have even more upside potential with restructuring. The analyst believes Citi can sell parts easier than realized, especially given only ''limited'' countries where consumer and institutional are highly integrated and an ability to divest consumer assets mostly by geography. Citi should at least remain open to more restructuring, he contends. He reiterates an Outperform rating on the shares.

Wells Fargo reiterates Outperform on Equifax after Congressional testimony
Wells Fargo analyst William Warmington reiterates an Outperform rating on Equifax with a $127 price target following three days of Congressional testimony by former CEO Rick Smith. The legislative proposals discussed were either high-probability/low-impact, like requiring companies meet minimum cybersecurity standards and have a reaction plan in event of a breach,or low-probability/high-impact, like allowing consumers to opt out of having Equifax track their data and mandatory per-account fines for data breaches, Warmington tells investors in a research note. The analyst expects investor focus to shift to Equifax's preliminary 2018 guidance on its upcoming Q3 earnings call. He thinks the company's long-term growth model remains intact and introduced above-consensus 2019 revenue and earnings per shares estimates of $3.77B and $6.80. Many investors expect 2018 to be a "transition year" with revenue and costs impacted by the breach, Warmington writes.

William Blair, despite estimate cuts, positive on Equifax risk/reward
William Blair analyst Timothy McHugh lowered his estimates for Equifax to account for the data breach. The analyst cut his 2017 earnings per share estimate by 23c to $5.83, 2018 estimate by 83c to $5.91, and 2019 estimate by $1.05 to $6.35. Equifax will exclude some of the short-term items directly associated with the breach from its adjusted earnings, so the estimates do not include those items, McHugh tells investors in a research note. He now assumes organic growth for Equifax of 2% in 2018 and 6% in 2019. The analyst, while admitting the stock's multiple will not return to historical levels "anytime soon," views the company's risk/reward profile as "positive at current levels, particularly for patient investors." He keeps an Outperform rating on Equifax.

DOJ appointment catalyst for CenturyLink, Level 3 deal, says Raymond James
Makan Delrahim was finally confirmed by the Senate yesterday as head of the Department of Justice Antitrust Division, Raymond James analyst Frank Louthan tells investors in a research note. He believes not having an antitrust head is at least partially to blame for the delay in mergers and acquisitions in the Technology & Communications space this year, including outstanding transactions like CenturyLink (CTL)/Level 3 Communications (LVLT) and AT&T (T)/Time Warner (TWX), as well as potential deals like Sprint (S)/T-Mobile U.S. (TMUS). The appointment of Delrahim is a catalyst for the approval of CenturyLink's acquisition of Level 3, where the Department of Justice has been the bottleneck, Louthan writes.

Amazon.com quarter could be 'another mixed-bag,' says Barclays
Barclays analyst Ross Sandler thinks Amazon.com's Q3 may be "another mixed-bag" like last quarter, with revenue and operating income ahead of consensus, but Q4 guidance disappointing on operating income. The company's retail profitability is likely to continue to suffer near term from heavy investments in both core Amazon and Whole Foods, Sandler tells investors in a pre-earnings research note. He believes, however, that most investors understand that margin is available when Amazon decides to capture more. He does not see a "ton of downside" in the stock, saying revenue growth is "what matters most at this stage of development." The analyst recommends using on share pullback on profitability concerns as a buying opportunity. Amazon remains Sandler's longer term top pick in the Internet & Media space. He has an Overweight rating on the shares with a $1,150 price target.
