Nielsen to independently measure subscription-based streaming content.

Nielsen announced that it is now offering the industry a syndicated solution to independently measure subscription-based streaming content including companies such as Netflix (NFLX). With the commercial release of Nielsen Subscription Video On Demand, or SVOD, Content Ratings, eight major television networks and production studios, including A&E Networks, Disney-ABC (DIS), Lionsgate (LGF), NBCUniversal, Warner Brothers (TWX) and others, have already signed on to subscribe to this game-changing service. This new solution takes SVOD measurement to the next level with a significant enhancement to its video on demand content ratings framework, which leverages the rich demographic and household characteristic data of the Nielsen national TV panel, to identify viewing to these programs. These new insights will empower content owners and networks with real data into what was previously a significant and expanding blind spot of consumer behavior. Nielsen's new SVOD Content Ratings solution will provide measurement of programs at the season and episode level in a manner comparable to linear television data-including ratings, reach, frequency and segmentation reporting-as a way for clients and the industry to better understand where this content fits in the larger media ecosystem.

Pivotal says Facebook ad reach claims look inflated
Pivotal Research analyst Brian Wieser noted that Australian trade publication AdNews found that Facebook (FB) claims to reach more 16-39 year-olds in the country than exist according to the country's census. His analysis of Facebook Ads Manager data compared to the U.S. consensus reveals a similar outcome. His talks with ad agency executives on this topic indicate that the gap between Facebook and census figures is not widely known, Wieser tells investors. The analyst, who keeps a Sell rating and $140 price target on Facebook, believes the primary winner of the social media giant's video expansion will be third party measurement firms, such as Nielsen (NLSN) and comScore (SCOR), he added.

Nielsen fundamentals imply $35-$40 share price, says Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Kevin McVeigh says current fundamentals imply a $35-$40 share price target for Nielsen. To reflect an incrementally more cautious view on both Watch and Buy, McVeigh lowered his price target for the shares to $40 from $44. The analyst sees the potential for increased competition saying the shift to digital from linear has the potential to cause disruption in Watch, McVeigh tells investors in a research note. He sees no clear catalyst to drive the stock higher near term and keeps a Hold rating on Nielsen.

Nielsen has reached attractive entry point, says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo believes that Nielsen has reached an attractive entry point after the company's Q2 revenue missed expectations and it cut its 2017 revenue guidance. The analyst says that businesses accounting for 83%-84% of its revenue performed well last quarter, and it is upbeat on the company's current product and margin protection initiatives. Wells keeps an Outperform rating on the shares.

Lionsgate shares have further upside, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Stan Meyers says that while Lionsgate last night missed topline expectations, it beat on adjusted OIBDA, reflecting higher contribution margins across Film, TV and Media segments. The analyst believes the company is positioned to outperform expectations as Starz delivers more subs with its new original content strategy in 2017 and the Motion Picture Group "gets back on track" with La La Land outperformance. He sees further upside for Lionsgate shares and reiterates an Overweight rating on the name with a $35 price target.

Lionsgate shares remain attractive, says Piper Jaffray
After analyzing the company's film studio, Piper Jaffray analyst Stan Meyers says shares of Lionsgate remain attractive for a "fast growing studio" with expanding margins and solid free cash flow generation. The analyst remains upbeat on the company as Starz transitions into a growth story and it continues to deliver high quality TV content while "systematically assembling a de-risked, diversified film slate." Meyers' base case scenario points to a $35 valuation, which is his price target, $26 in the bear case and $40 in the bull case. He keeps an Overweight rating on Lionsgate.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Wells Fargo with analyst Larry Biegelsen saying J&J is poised to reaccelerate its sales growth due to accretion from the Actelion acquisition, a "more measured" than expected impact from biosimilar competition, "solid performance" of key drugs and a pipeline that is "coming to fruition." 2. Morgan Stanley (MS) upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Credit Suisse with analyst Susan Roth Katzke citing the over 10% total return potential in the shares. 3. Disney (DIS) upgraded to Top Pick from Outperform at RBC Capital with analyst Steven Cahall saying he thinks the company has reached a turning point with ESPN approaching less than 20% of earnings and "non-Media" Disney remaining a global leader in content that is executing well. 4. INC Research (INCR) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Jefferies analyst David Windley saying the recent share pullback provides a "compelling" entry point. 5. Disney downgraded to Neutral on increased pay-TV caution at Guggenheim
As previously reported, Guggenheim analyst Michael Morris downgraded Disney (DIS) to Neutral from Buy, citing his increased caution toward pay-TV trends and concern that expectations for the contribution from its content cycle are too high. While he is optimistic about the company's proposed direct-to-consumer streaming products, he expects the initial investment and long lead time into the launch to weigh on sentiment over the next 12 months, Morris tells investors. The analyst, who lowered his price target on Disney to $105 from $122, also downgraded Viacom (VIAB) and AMC Networks (AMCX) this morning.

Diamond Offshore (DO) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Citi with analyst Scott Gruber saying that if an upturn is forthcoming, Transocean should outperform given a "diminution" of concern toward its balance sheet and more new contract catalysts. 4. Cummins (CMI) downgraded to Neutral following dealer checks at Longbow with analyst Faheem Sabeiha citing a recent truck dealer survey that suggests initial 2018 sales growth is below current industry forecasts, partly due to driver shortage concerns. 5. DOJ appointment catalyst for CenturyLink, Level 3 deal, says Raymond James
Makan Delrahim was finally confirmed by the Senate yesterday as head of the Department of Justice Antitrust Division, Raymond James analyst Frank Louthan tells investors in a research note. He believes not having an antitrust head is at least partially to blame for the delay in mergers and acquisitions in the Technology & Communications space this year, including outstanding transactions like CenturyLink (CTL)/Level 3 Communications (LVLT) and AT&T (T)/Time Warner (TWX), as well as potential deals like Sprint (S)/T-Mobile U.S. (TMUS). The appointment of Delrahim is a catalyst for the approval of CenturyLink's acquisition of Level 3, where the Department of Justice has been the bottleneck, Louthan writes.
